Situated in 23 acres of leafy grounds, Queen Mary’s College is an inclusive, vibrant and high achieving sixth form college with a fantastic reputation both locally and nationally. Following Ofsted’s latest inspection in 2016, The National School and College Performance Tables not only identify Queen Mary’s College as one of the best in the region, but it also places it in the top 5% of all A- level providers across the country.  

The PE facilities are outstanding the department makes extensive use of these facilities, which include a gymnasium, indoor heated swimming pool, a large sports hall and a fitness suite. The College also has a 3G football and rugby pitch, sand-based Astroturf pitch as well as rugby and football grass pitches. In addition, the College makes extensive use of council facilities that include a synthetic athletics track, water based Astroturf pitch, netball, cricket and indoor tennis facilities.   

The College has developed strong links with the local community working with primary and secondary schools and external clubs such as Totally Tennis. 

At present the Department comprises seven full time staff and two part-time staff delivering a wide range of courses at levels 2 & 3:

  • A Level courses in Sport and PE  
  • Cambridge Technical Sport and Physical Activity  
  • BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport & Exercise Science 
  • BTEC Certificate/ Subsidiary Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science. 
  • Level 2 Cambridge Technical Extended Certificate in Sport. 

In addition the Department offers a wide range of enrichment courses and activities: 

  • YMCA Fitness Instructors courses at Level 1, 2 and 3  
  • Higher Sports Leader Award. 
  • National Pool Lifeguard Qualification
  • First Aid at Work 
  • National Governing Body Level 1 awards.   
  • Duke of Edinburgh Awards up to Silver level  

A large number of students participate in an extensive programme of team games, which is mostly on Wednesday afternoons. The College’s representative teams include women’s and men’s basketball, netball, rugby, badminton, athletics, cricket and tennis. The College also runs a successful Football Academy comprising two men’s’ and one women’s’ football team.  

Students within the Academy and other college teams receive coaching, structured within their timetable.  Several of our students have reached county and international level in their sports.

Whether you’re experienced or newly qualified, you should be an inspiring teacher with a good working knowledge of recent post-16 curriculum developments. A willingness to contribute to the development of course materials for courses offered by the department is also essential.

Queen Mary’s College is a large progressive and successful sixth form college, conveniently situated close to the centre of Basingstoke in thirty acres of parkland and playing fields. The College has excellent facilities, including the Central Studio (a professional theatre), and a purpose built sports centre for students, staff and local residents, including a swimming pool and two floodlit artificial sports pitches . The site also boasts a state of the art specialist Art and IT building and in January this year a new £12.8 million, three-storey facility was opened designed to accommodate Science, Humanities, Sport and students with learning difficulties and disabilities . Queen Mary’s College is continuing to enhance all aspects of estates and facilities. Teaching and Learning outcomes at the College are excellent. Staff and students enjoy working and studying here and being in the vanguard of educational development in a fast changing 14-19 environment.
