Teaching ServiceNewcastle High School is a large, comprehensive school situated on two sites in the centre of Newcastle.
The Parkway Avenue site caters for students from Year 7 through to Year 12, while the Cooks Hill Campus delivers an alternative curriculum in partnership with Big Picture Education and caters for students from Year 9 through to Year 12. Cooks Hill Campus continues to engage students in personalised interest based learning. The campus is pioneering student centred curriculum delivery working closely with families, mentors and universities.
Of the 1250 students enrolled at Newcastle High School (including 136 enrolments at the Cooks Hill Campus), 10% identify as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, 7% have English as an additional language or dialect and there is a Support Unit made up of six classes, increasing to seven in 2021.
The learning community takes great pride in the promotion of tolerance and good citizenship among students creating a caring and inclusive environment. Academic and extra-curricular opportunities reflect the interests of students experiencing success in sporting, creative, cultural, performing arts and public speaking endeavours.
Approval to teach special education and/or experience in teaching students with mild and moderate intellectual disabilities, emotional and behavioural difficulties, Autism and complex additional needs.
Demonstrated ability to develop and implement quality, innovative differentiated programs to meet the individual needs of students.
Demonstrated ability to develop positive relationships with all stakeholders (students, parents, community agencies etc), including Aboriginal students and families, that underpin quality learning experiences.
Highly developed communication skills and interpersonal skills, with the proven ability to work collaboratively as a team member advocating for the inclusion of students with disabilities across all facets of school life and in the wider community.
An unconditional full approval to teach is a requirement. If you do not hold a full approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education, you are required to commence the application process at the same time as you apply for this teaching opportunity.
