Position Information

Mitchell High School is a comprehensive secondary school (enrolment above 1000), including 38 Aboriginal students and is located in the Western Suburbs of Sydney at Blacktown. The school has a multicultural population with 52% of students coming from 46 language backgrounds other than English, while over 10% of students have a refugee background.

The school provides a pleasant, caring environment where students are encouraged to follow a fine tradition of striving for excellence. The emphasis on tradition and excellence is expected from all students by high personal standards in study, commitment, personal appearance, and responsible behaviours.

These values are strongly supported by the school community. The school has an excellent reputation in the local community and performs well in academic, sporting, and cultural aspects of the curriculum. The school takes all students from the local area and has very strong demand for out of area enrolment.  A wide curriculum offering is enhanced by strong and flexible use of technology to support learning, special provisions for high achieving students and for those experiencing learning difficulties, English as a Second Language or dialect (EAL/D) and Transition Education programs.

Various pathways for students are provided, such as an academic pathway to university, TAFE pathways, School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships and alternative pathways to employment. The school has an excellent record of student participation in extracurricular activities such as volunteering, sporting, and cultural experiences beyond the school. Student leadership is strong and encouraged. Mitchell High School has a proud history of International Links. The school has exemplar programs in PBL, High Achievers, and Multiculturalism while offering an innovative Self Select class in Years 7 to 10 for highly motivated and self-directed learners.

Over the next three years areas for further development have been identified which will ensure our continued success. There will be a strong emphasis on improving literacy and numeracy skills and HSC results. Teachers will be further developed in the areas of implementing data informed and driven practices.
