Job overview

A role for someone who wants to teach rather than "support". Due to retirement an exciting opportunity has arisen to appoint a Assistant Teacher at Maple Hayes Hall School in Lichfield. Maple Hayes is a small specialist school for pupils aged  7-17 that have a diagnosis of Dyslexia.

This role is unusual when compared to a Teaching Assistant role in that we promote independence in learning and reduce the dependency of our SEN pupils on adult support. The Assistant Teacher helps pupils develop the skills and resilience to participate and work within a classroom dynamic and under teacher direction. We continually work to minimise dependence upon support.

Pupils at Maple Hayes School have Specific Learning Difficulties (dyslexia) and have struggled to learn using a conventional phonics/multisensory approach. We work, instead, with morphemes (meaning units in words) - not by using syllables. We also work with pupils to develop a fully cursive handwriting style so that spellings can be learnt by Kinaesthetic tracing. Working as a  Assistant Teacher at Maple Hayes will require the flexibility to take on board these new teaching and learning techniques to help our pupils progress.

Maple Hayes Hall School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children through safer recruitment. All appointments will be subject to a satisfactory DBS check and a continuing subscription to the DBS update service.

Hours:

Term-time: Monday- to Friday 8.15 am. – 4:40 pm, with Saturday mornings 8.15am – 11.05am. (please note that terms are shorter than mainstream)
15 Training/Preparation days per year 9:am -4:30pm
After school staff meetings (generally two a term)

There will also be the requirement to attend on the annual Parents’ Open Day
