Job overview

THE ROLE

We are seeking to recruit a Teaching Assistant with a passion for working in education and working with young people. We are looking for someone primarily to work with our newly-arrived Afghan refugees, to ensure they continue to thrive within our school community.

In line with up-to-date research, we use effective models of supporting in-class that allow students to be as independent as possible, while receiving the scaffolding they need to ensure they can achieve. Teaching Assistants communicate closely with the subject teacher so that they gain experience in co-planning and co-delivering parts of lessons, and they are there to support the whole class, not just one individual. Teaching Assistants are expected to know the curriculum of the subject(s) in which they support, as well as to know the particular Special Educational Needs of students in their classes.

The Academy has implemented a new knowledge-based curriculum. The aim of the curriculum is to develop culturally literate young adults who have the knowledge and skills to be successful in any walk of life. Teaching Assistants are managed by the Inclusion Department, but exist very much within subject Departments, using their own knowledge and experiences to support students in one or two particular subject areas.

WHO WE ARE

Laureate Academy is a state-funded secondary school based in Hemel Hempstead. We are part of Future Academies, a Multi-Academy Trust which includes three primary schools and six secondary schools in and around London and Hertfordshire. We are motivated by a mission of social change and reducing educational inequality. Our school and Trust are unique in our approach to a knowledge-rich curriculum; our school motto is Libertas per cultum (Freedom through education), and in our strong emphasis on raising young people’s aspirations and outcomes through the teaching of classical and traditional subjects. Our children and young people study a bespoke curriculum developed by researchers at our Curriculum Centre, which places a focus on developing their cultural literacy and their awareness of the forces, words and events that have shaped our society today.

THE BENEFITS

  • All new Teaching Assistants have regular access to in-school training opportunities. This develops their understanding of a wide range of Special Educational Needs as well as to further their wider professional development.
  • An excellent pathway into teacher training. The Academy is part of a Multi-Academy Trust with a Teaching School, offering School-based Initial Teacher Training in a wide range of subjects. Teaching Assistants have used their experience within the Academy to make successful applications onto this teacher training, and are becoming qualified members of The Grange Academy teaching staff. We see this role as an excellent stepping stone for a career in teaching.
  • We are developing a highly academic culture where the highest standards are expected of staff and pupils. It is a dynamic and demanding school and one where pupils and staff are exceptionally well supported. It is also a happy, cohesive and very purposeful environment.
  • Additional benefits. We also offer a range of employee benefits including an on-site gym, season ticket loan, Perkbox and Cycle to Work scheme. Our location is well served by public transport and we have free on-site car parking.
