Job overview

Full or part-time (at least 0.6 FTE), permanent position, starting September 2019.

An enthusiastic and highly professional Teaching Assistant, with experience of special educational needs or ambition to develop a career in education, is sought to provide classroom and administrative assistance to teachers in our expanding Junior Years department.

Our employees are inspiring and creative, transforming the futures of intelligent pupils who experience challenges in their learning due to literacy and language-related difficulties, by empowering them.

The School:

Nationally celebrated, More House School provides an exceptional, mainstream education for boys with Specific Learning Difficulties.  Providing a transformative education repeatedly recognised as ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted over more than a decade, we offer a specialised learning environment for 470 day and boarding boys from Year 4 to Year 13.  Our pupils are taught to recognise their strengths and develop their self-belief so that they achieve independence and extraordinary results at GCSE, BTEC and A Level, above the national averages.

About the department:

The staff supporting the Junior Years are a strong team where mutual support, and a common commitment to continual professional development are strong characteristics.

Gard’ner House is a dedicated building for the Junior school: years 4 to 6. They are very much a part of the whole school, however they attend the majority of their lessons and form time in this building. They use specialist facilities and are taught by specialist teachers for lessons such as Music, Sport and Technology.

The curriculum in the Junior School has a flexible approach to accommodate the needs of the boys. We are currently developing a project approach to their learning and plan to incorporate English and Maths into this. Class sizes are small and there is ample opportunity for boys to get involved in the school’s extensive extra-curricular programme.

We have a very creative and enthusiastic team of teachers and support staff who are keen to support the children in accessing the curriculum and encouraging the boys to recognise their academic and extra-curricular potential. The Junior School offers the boys strong pastoral provision as we understand that the boys may have found their educational experience to date difficult and they therefore need to develop their trust in the school, teachers and themselves.

About this post:

We are looking to appoint an energetic and committed Teaching Assistant, who will provide classroom-based and administrative support to the teachers in the department.  Duties will include preparing lesson resources, supervising pupils at recreational times and during lesson time, supporting groups or individual pupils in the classroom, accompanying trips, completing administrative tasks, and sharing with all colleagues in ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all pupils.  For the right candidate, confidence in providing occasional cover for teaching staff will be an advantage.

A comprehensive induction programme is offered, and ongoing professional development is supported through INSET days and training opportunities.  Lunch is provided free of charge, daily, as is parking within the school’s beautiful grounds.

The above list of duties is not exhaustive, and the post-holder may be required to perform such other duties as may be, from time to time, deemed necessary by the Headmaster.  This is a non-residential post.

Full or part-time considered, although full-days are preferred.

Outstanding day and boarding school for boy's aged 8-18 who struggle to thrive in a mainstream setting due to speech, language or communication issues.

Considered a national center of excellence, and the largest school of its kind in the UK.

Our aim is to help each boy who joins us, achieve, in the widest possible sense, more than he, or his parents, ever expected. This is accomplished by knowing a great deal about each student – his strengths as well as his difficulties. For his strengths, he must first be helped to identify them and, eventually, change them into a marketable form. His difficulties will not be static. We are mindful that we must be alert to changes caused by a student's own development, those of society and by the curriculum and make sure that each of our students is equipped to meet them.
