An exciting opportunity has arisen for passionate and creative Tutors to join our Supported Internship programme within our Lifestyle and Works team. Do you want the opportunity to join a friendly and supportive team to help young people with a learning disability? Do you want to help those with a learning difficulty and/or autism access the world of work? Does this sound like you? If so keep reading. 

As a Tutor you will teach English and Maths by embedding it into lessons about employability. Further life skills that will have a direct impact on the way your learners interact with their wider community are also taught. This role would suit someone who is looking for an opportunity to create fun and engaging lessons by thinking outside the box. To facilitate you to create your lesson plans you will be given at least one full day of planning and admin time a week. 

We are recruiting for 2 Tutors (1 x 37.5 hours per week and 1 x 22.5 or 30 hours per week). The roles are based in the Barnet, London area. Some travel is required.

Mencap have been helping people with a learning disability to find employment for over 45 years and this role would place you at the heart of our 3 Ships Programme. The 3 Ships Programme is Mencap’s education based programmes for supporting people with a learning disability to move closer to the job market and gain employment. The 3 Ships are Supported Internships, Traineeships and Apprenticeships.

Mencap's Supported Internships combines education and work experience to prepare our learners for employment. You will have a focus on the delivery of the educational element of Supported Internships programmes. You will work closely with a group of Caseworkers to provide holistic support in finding paid employment. 

The successful candidate will deliver elements of teaching, learning and assessment to learners including accredited functional skills in both English and Mathematics. This Tutor role would suit a highly motivated and qualified teacher or someone looking to pursue this career.

Do you have the key skills and requirements for a Tutor (essential)?:

  • Experience of supporting people
  • Experience of delivering against targets
  • Experience of working with SEN learners
  • A-C/9-4 English & Maths GCSE (or equivalent)
  • Recognised teaching qualification at level 5 or above (DTLLS, PGCE, CertEd)
  • Knowledge and experience of delivering and assessing functional skills English and Maths up to level 2
  • Experience & knowledge of safe working practices
  • Good classroom management skills and strategies
  • Good time management and planning skills
  • Demonstrable experience of safeguarding and an understanding of safeguarding principle
