Teaching Opportunities

with Wellington College in China

University Guidance Counsellor (US focus)

Due to the continued growth and expansion of the senior school the College is seeking to recruit a new university guidance counsellor. Most Wellington pupils apply to multiple destinations with around 50% choosing to apply to the United States and approximately 75% choosing to apply to the UK. In addition, pupils apply to a range of other international university destinations including Hong Kong, Korea, Singapore, Canada, Australia and the Netherlands. The typical Wellington pupil is academically high-performing and they, and their families, have very high expectations about their future university destination. Most pupils go on to study at top ranked university destinations, but pupils are encouraged to researching more widely into their university choices looking at where they will learn best and thrive.

This is an exciting time to join Wellington’s university guidance team. The school has recently implemented a review of its university guidance provision and has adopted a new strategy. The new ‘Higher Education Pathway’ designed to increase and broaden the support the school offers to pupils, and their families, throughout their time at Wellington. This will lead to a significant growth in the area and the successful applicant should be happy and willing to contribute to the school’s aim to create a truly world class, internationally focused university guidance and careers provision. It is vital that the successful candidate is proactive and committed to producing the best possible outcome for every pupil, whilst also being flexible in adapting their views and approaches to university guidance to a demanding and truly internationally focused environment.

Wellington’s university guidance team are involved in supporting and advising pupils looking to make applications to a range of possible destinations. Although, we do not allocate pupils to a particular counsellor based on their favoured destination, it is vital for this particular appointment that the successful candidate has a strong knowledge of, and background in, the US admissions process – either from a school-based counselling role or university admissions background. This is done to ensure a suitable balance of backgrounds and perspectives within the existing university guidance team.

Wellington College International Shanghai  opened in August 2014 as Wellington’s second partnership school in China, and has rapidly developed a reputation as the premier international school in the city.   It currently has 1,280 pupils and continues to grow by over 150 pupils per year. The College is divided into three schools, with a Senior School (years 9 to 13) and Prep School (years 1 to 8) on the main campus and Early Years (nursery and reception) in a new purpose-built centre nearby.   The College curriculum combines our focus on the Wellington values with the best of English and international curriculums.  The youngest children in the nursery and reception classes follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum.   From year 1, the English National Curriculum provides the core of the curriculum in maths and literacy, with other lessons following the International Primary Curriculum.   From year 6 up, all children follow a school-devised curriculum, based on the English National Curriculum and taught by subject specialists to prepare for the study of IGCSE subjects in years 10 and 11.  Pupils in years 12 and 13 follow the prestigious IB Diploma Programme.

Wellington College International Shanghai aims to be the best international school i n China and to be great place for talented professionals to develop their careers. Our academic results to date have been outstanding, our IB students average above 36 points in 2018 and 2019, placing Wellington comfortably alongside the best international IB schools.    Most of our IGCSE pupils gain eight or more A*-A grades, with A* being by far the most common grade.

Success in public examinations is important and we celebrate it. However, at Wellington College, excellent exam results and great university destinations, in the UK and worldwide, are only part of the picture. We want our pupils to be the very best people that they can be: to be kind, to have integrity in their actions, to take responsibility when necessary, to have respect for their environment, for others and themselves, and finally to show courage when needed. The Wellington values frame the way we think about what it is be a Wellingtonian, including the ways we work and what we hope to become.
