The Trustees are seeking to appoint an inspirational Vice Principal for Excelsior Academy who will share Excelsior’s ambition to become an outstanding school. The successful candidate will possess the vision, experience and commitment to enable the entire community to achieve this goal together.

Excelsior Academy was opened in 2008 and became the first All Through school in Newcastle, offering education to pupils from 3 to 19 years of age. Excelsior serves one of the most challenging communities both in the region and nationally. All pupils in our primary, secondary and sixth form provision have access to the same high quality teaching, exceptional facilities and fabulous resources. Our purpose built building provides excellent facilities for the 1500 pupils who study here. Approximately 200 pupils attend our primary school (Rainbird), 1100 in the secondary phase and 200 in the sixth form. We are a popular choice for our local community and are oversubscribed in most year groups.

Excelsior is part of the Laidlaw Schools Trust (LST) established by our patron, Lord Laidlaw of Rothiemay, in 2008. The Trust supports seven schools in the North East of England, two All Through academies, one secondary and four primary schools.  LST prides itself on being a progressive, inclusive trust that supports every child to develop their talents whatever they may be. LST academies enjoy strong support from an experienced central team based in Newcastle.

This post has been recently created as part of a realignment of responsibilities across the Senior Leadership Team. In September 2020 Excelsior will be evolving the current ‘School within a School’ model. Subject delivery and pupil setting and banding will be arranged across the Academy by Year groups. This will allow greater flexibility in developing appropriate curriculum pathways for pupils aged 11-16. Pastoral support for pupils however, will be maintained as currently but within a new House based system.

Governors wish to appoint a Vice Principal with a proven track record of successful senior leadership who possess an inclusive ethos and passion for providing outstanding pastoral care and personal development for pupils. The successful candidate will lead the Academy Welfare and Personal Development teams across the Academy, particularly within the 11 – 16 phase. Excelsior has an excellent reputation in this regard and has been recognised by Ofsted and others for the high quality of care provided for pupils and the wider community.

Further details and an application pack can be downloaded from the Careers section on the Laidlaw Schools Trust website http://laidlawschoolstrust.com/careers/ or on the Excelsior Academy website https://excelsior.laidlawschoolstrust.co.uk/

Interested candidates are strongly encouraged to tour the Academy and meet the Principal and staff when making their application. Please contact Julia Mardling, PA to the Principal on 0191 2288 400 to arrange an informal visit.

Closing Date: 12 noon Monday 20th April 2020.
Candidates who have not been contacted by 22nd April 2020 may assume they have been unsuccessful.
Interviews will take place: Monday 27thand Tuesday 28th April 2020 (2 day process)
Applications should be returned to:  susan.wright@excelsiornewcastle.org.uk
Start Date: Monday 1st September 2020 (or earlier by negotiation)

We are an equal opportunities employer strongly committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. The successful applicant will be required to obtain an Enhanced Certificate of Disclosure from the DBS and a range of other recruitment checks. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate their commitment to children’s safeguarding.

Excelsior Academy is an all-through school located in Newcastle, Tyne and Wear. The school was first established in 2008, as a secondary school and sixth form (later split into three separate schools), and in 2012 it was decided that the school would merge with a local primary school, creating a new school for pupils aged 3-19. With around 1200 pupils, Excelsior Academy is larger than the average secondary school, and covers a culturally and economically diverse catchment area, a fact reflected in the school’s intake.

Values and Vision

Excelsior Academy works hard in order to ensure that the transition of pupils from primary to secondary provision is as smooth and non-disruptive as possible. As a relatively young school, it is able to make extensive use of a wide range of modern facilities and learning resources, and offer a diverse and far-reaching curriculum, with older pupils having numerous academic and vocational qualifications to choose from. Excelsior Academy also works hard to provide for pupils with special educational needs.

Ofsted

“Students are most enthusiastic about the academy and talk about being ‘privileged’ to have so many opportunities. They say that they particularly like the fact that they are respected and listened to. The percentage of students gaining five good passes at GCSE, including English and mathematics, has risen by an average of six percentage points each year since the academy opened in 2008. This was from a very low baseline.”
