Job overview

Set in beautiful grounds and surrounding countryside, and within easy reach of the historic cathedral city of Salisbury, the New Forest, and the spectacular Jurassic coast, Avon Valley College is ideally located in the south of Wiltshire.

Avon Valley College is the one secondary school within our multi-academy trust. It is much valued by its mixed civilian-military community. As part of the rebasing of troops from Germany, all local schools will see a rise in population between now and 2020. Owing to the doubling in size from 600 to 1150-1200, Wiltshire Council is in the process of a phased building programme to bring 18 new purpose built classrooms to Avon Valley College. The Trust intends that phased programme to continue in order to refresh and renew the entire estate.

The school has undergone a significant period of change in the last year and standards are now rapidly climbing. Results this year were significantly better than in 2017 across the board. 2018-19 is a critical year in our journey, and we are looking for strong leadership to capitalise on the momentum we have built.

Therefore, we are seeking to appoint a Vice Principal to join Avon Valley College in January 2019. The successful applicant will have a good understanding of the cultural reforms underway, the need for accountability at all levels, and the ability to inspire great teaching. He/she will be able to demonstrate significant impact in a leadership area and be seeking a fresh challenge in a school that is in the process of transformation.

About Salisbury Plain Academies – a multi-academy trust

The Trust, formed in 2016, is highly aspirational and intends to establish a hub of excellence on Salisbury Plain. It will achieve this aim by focusing on the continuous professional development of teachers in order to enable them to teach innovatively and successfully at all levels, working collaboratively across all our schools to develop leadership in all aspects.

Salisbury Plain Academies wants its leaders to focus on what they do best - improving standards wherever needed and extending the academy’s reach in the local community, motivated by improving the life chances of local children.

Potential candidates wishing to visit and have a tour of the school should contact Rachel Titchener, PA to the Principal, on 01980 652467 to arrange a mutually convenient date and time.

Respect. Determination. Excellence.

Avon Valley Academy is a thriving, co-educational school, educating young people between the ages of 11 and 16 years. Located in Durrington, our school has a strong reputation for being at the heart of the community and has built strong relationships with the two local army bases, at Larkhill and Bulford.

As a school, we aim for every lesson and every day to be exceptional. To achieve this, we ensure that all staff have access to a wide variety of training and are given time to foster strong relationships with our students. Our staff take pride in how well they know our students, and are always looking to go the extra mile to help them achieve their dreams.

With our strong pastoral care and high standards for behaviour, our school encourages students to have high self-worth and love coming to school. This has created a vibrant school community in which each individual can thrive.

In May 2022, we joined Acorn Education Trust, which has provided exciting opportunities to improve local education and draw on collective experience. We work closely with other schools within the Trust and the central team to help us continue to grow from strength to strength.

Our school has a wide range of excellent facilities, including:
