Job overview

The Senior School at Farlington seeks to offer a dynamic and forward-thinking provision for our students in Years 9-13. Pupils choose GCSE and A-Level options from a broad range of subjects. Our curriculum offers great breadth, including within the timetable: opportunity for sport, Life Skills, and a full range of clubs and activities. Recent curriculum developments have included Business Studies, Design and Technology, and Computer Science introduced at GCSE, and the addition of A-Level Economics and Criminology into the Sixth Form. Sport is an important part of our curriculum, with weekly games coaching and inter-school fixtures (played each Tuesday afternoon). Music, Dance and Drama are also key aspects of the opportunities on offer at Farlington, and pastoral care is paramount across the school.

Year 9 is a significant intake year for Farlington School, with children increasingly joining us from other local prep schools, and this September we will take the year group to four forms for the first time. Our aspiration is to maintain this into future years, so that our Senior School achieves a consistent four-form model. The Senior School represents one of the strongest areas of growth within the school, and sustaining this growth will be a key priority for the successful candidate.

Our Sixth Form provides an aspirational section of the school, and all future Sixth Formers (including our current Year 11 pupils) apply for their place.

The school has appointed a new role of Head of Sixth Form for September 2024, and this role will report into the Head of Senior School position. It is intended that the two roles will work closely together to increase our pupil retention into our Sixth Form and to grow our external recruitment.

The school is also launching a pre A-Level course for international students from September 2024 onwards, and a Language School to operate through the school holidays from Easter 2025.

Before you apply for this post, please ensure that you read our Safeguarding Policy (Section 2: Safer Recruitment), as well as our Staff Privacy Notice, both of which can be accessed via the Policies section of the school’s website.

Please then complete an application form (available within the Job Opportunities section of our website). The completed and signed application form, along with a brief supporting letter addressed to Mr James Passam, Headmaster, should be sent to:

Mrs Natalie Briano, Operations Manager, Farlington School, Strood Park, Horsham RH12 3PN. Applications may also be submitted via email to nb@farlingtonschool.com.

Please note that any application form submitted electronically must be completed in the existing application format.

The closing date for applications is Monday 3 June 2024

First-round interviews will take place from the week beginning Monday 10 June 2024.

Farlington School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.

Farlington is an independent co-educational day and boarding school, providing exceptional, all-round education for boys and girls aged 4 to 18, located on the West Sussex / Surrey border.

Founded in 1896, Farlington School is nestled in 33 acres of Sussex parkland on the outskirts of the delightful market town of Horsham. Just 25 minutes' drive from Gatwick Airport and within easy reach of Central London and the South Coast, our location is both idyllic and convenient.

Formerly an all-girls' school, we began welcoming boys in 2018 and will be fully co-educational by September 2021. We are very proud to be the only independent school for boys and girls aged 4 to 18 in the Horsham area.

At Farlington, our vision is to inspire our students to embrace learning in all its forms. We are a forward-thinking school where academic success and co-curricular achievement are valued equally. Every pupil is nurtured here, and encouraged to fulfil his or her potential whilst engaging with opportunity. No subject is considered off limits; no position of responsibility unattainable.

We are proudly and intentionally a smaller school, where each student is valued and where opportunities abound. Pastoral care is paramount, with the happiness and wellbeing of every student at the core of daily life. Farlington’s ‘can-do’ philosophy instils confidence in our students, enabling them to thrive as they go out into the world and shape their own future.

Our aim is to instil a long-lasting love of learning. We stretch the most able and support the least confident, so that they each fulfil their individual academic potential.

Our most recent Independent Schools Inspectorate report described Farlington School as providing ‘an excellent curriculum with outstanding teaching’. Our staff pride themselves on an ability to harness a child’s academic talents and our priority is to provide an education which challenges and inspires.
