The Board of Trustees of Kolej Tuanku Ja’afar (KTJ) are looking for an outstanding Principal to drive the ongoing success of KTJ, one of the premier international schools in Malaysia.

About the School

Founded in 1991 by the Royal Family of the state, the School bears the name of the 10th King of Malaysia, Tuanku Ja’afar, and has grown rapidly to become a recognised and outstanding school in the region. The School has a strong boarding community with around 600 boarding students aged 11 to 19 and approximately 350 day students aged 3 to 19.

The School values of compassion, empathy and mutual respect are evident throughout the School and ensure a wonderful working environment for staff and students. It is truly a delightful experience to be part of the KTJ community. KTJ offers a blend of the International Primary Curriculum and the National Curriculum of England and Wales in the Primary School. In the Secondary School the students take IGCSE examinations followed by an enhanced A level programme. The A level results are phenomenal with students gaining access to the very best universities in the world.

KTJ is known for its dynamic community where students excel in all areas of school life, whether in national debating competitions, music, drama, sport or academics. KTJ students are participative, enthusiastic and committed to everything they do.

The School is accredited by the Council of International Schools, is a member of FOBISIA and COBIS. Its current Principal, Dr Simon Watson, is leaving after seven years of exceptional leadership to take on a new post in Bahrain. Dr Watson is also a member of HMC and the Academy of International School Heads.

The Role

The Principal will inspire, lead, develop and manage all aspects of school life, including playing a key role in nurturing the values and culture of the School. Critical to his or her success will be the continued delivery of the School’s distinctive educational offering, a focus on achieving the very highest standards and building strong purposeful relationships within the community.

The successful applicant will:

  • be an excellent communicator;
  • be an experienced senior leader, preferably at a Principal level;
  • quickly get up to speed in understanding the subtleties of international education in a Malaysian context;
  • understand the benefits of a boarding school and be able to ensure the successful integration of day students into a boarding environment;
  • appreciate that leading learning is at the heart of school leadership and will build a team committed to further develop all aspects of learning in the School;
  • drive the marketing and admissions process of the School with passion and a focus on quality;
  • retain an unparalleled commitment to the School’s vision of “empowering global leaders for a sustainable world”;
  • engage with students, teachers, parents and the wider community;
  • manage financial budgets and commercial aspects of the School with astuteness and business acumen;
  • demonstrate the ability to create and execute a strategic plan and manage complex building projects.

Our accreditations

In 2025, KTJ was once again awarded the Council of International Schools (CIS) International Accreditation. This accreditation involves a comprehensive and rigorous evaluation process, assessing the institution's adherence to internationally recognised standards and offering recommendations for ongoing development. KTJ exceeded standards in seven out of eight Boarding evaluation areas, including accommodation, food, healthcare, school life, overall wellbeing, parent communication, and safeguarding. KTJ has been a CIS accredited school for 15 years.

KTJ is also Council of British International Schools (COBIS) accredited, and a member of the Association of International Malaysian Schools (AIMS), Boarding Schools’ Association (BSA), Federation of British International School in Asia (FOBISIA), and The Heads’ Conference (HMC).
