We are delighted to announce a fantastic opportunity to join the Communications faculty at the ‘outstanding’ (Ofsted, 2009) Arthur Terry School in Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands.  We are excited to recruit an enthusiastic and motivated teacher to work alongside the existing team in helping to support and develop our provision.  Currently, we offer GCSE English Literature and English Language (AQA), along with the full range of AQA A Level specifications in English Literature (Spec A), English Language and English Combined.  We pride ourselves in consistently achieving high outcomes for our students, whilst constantly looking for innovative ways to improve our provision.  Our most recent examination results showed 77% of our Year 11 students achieving a grade 5 or above, with 36% achieving a grade 7.  We welcome applications from teachers who are committed to developing their own pedagogy and who are keen to work in a vibrant and dynamic Faculty.

Through our multi-academy trust, and our status as a National Support School and Teaching School, opportunities for progression and professional development are aplenty at Arthur Terry.  CPD is personalised and the well-being and support of staff is our utmost priority.  We work closely with schools across our multi-academy trust, feeder schools, and more recently, with Modern Foreign Languages as part of our Communications Faculty.  We look forward to welcoming applications to a Faculty who are relentless in their drive to be excellent in all aspects of their work.  If you want to develop your career in the best possible surroundings, we want to hear from you!

OVERVIEW

The Arthur Terry School is a large, popular and heavily oversubscribed Academy with a fully-comprehensive, mixed, 11-18 intake. There are over 1750 students on roll, including over 400 students in the Arthur Terry Sixth Form. We pride ourselves on our local accountability and comprehensive values which befits our motto, “where everyone achieves”. Our students are at the heart of everything we do and we are committed to providing opportunities to develop the whole child. Our students are cared for, nurtured and helped to be the very best person that they can be.

We are part of the Arthur Terry Learning Partnership, a Multi-Academy Trust of five secondary schools and seven primary schools. Our distributed leadership group structure, including the Director of Secondary Education for the ATLP, Headteacher, two Deputy Headteachers and wider leadership group gives us the capacity to deliver an outstanding education whilst supporting and working with other schools and institutions within and beyond the MAT.

We are a Cohort 1 Teaching School with over 30 schools in the alliance, a major School Direct provider and successful SCITT provider. We have one of the largest school based Sixth Forms in the West Midlands drawing students from Birmingham, Walsall, Staffordshire and Warwickshire. Our status as a National Support School enables our CEO and Director of Secondary Education as NLEs together with many SLEs amongst our staff body to provide powerful and effective support and collaborative working within our multi-academy trust and wider school alliance. Our teaching, support staff and governors benefit from a comprehensive and personalised talent development and leadership programme.

ABOUT US

In the summer of 2019, we celebrated our best ever GCSE results, over 80% of our students achieved a grade 4 in English and Maths. In addition, over 60% of our students achieved a grade 5, strong pass, which is well above the expected national average. Over a quarter of GSCE academic entries were graded at 7 or above with over 75 entries being awarded a grade 9. The Progress 8 headline measure was validated at 0.35.

Our last OFSTED inspection concluded that we are an outstanding school and a further HMI subject inspection for History confirmed outstanding teaching and learning, provision and leadership and management.

Our curriculum vision is to create outstanding, personalised learning and enrichment opportunities that develop our young people into confident, independent, lifelong learners, who are equipped with the qualifications and skills to make a positive contribution to the local community and beyond.

Planning has been undertaken, in line with the Arthur Terry Learning Partnership Curriculum Philosophy to provide students with a broad and balanced academic programme that enables students to follow the National Curriculum and study subjects from the academic core as well as subjects from the Performing Arts, Art, Design and Technology, Business and Computing.

Our provision is a coherent and carefully sequenced “knowledge engaged” curriculum based on the principles of cognitive science. There is a focus on development of literacy and the application of acquired knowledge to ensure children access the curriculum at a depth to ensure a deep and enduring understanding in discrete subject areas. The curriculum framework of cognitive education is planned to enable children to think independently and contribute positively to society and the wider world.

The content and experiences within in our curriculum are designed to accumulate and address the gaps in cultural capital of all our students in particularly the disadvantaged. Our extra-curricular offer supports our provision, with a focus within each subject on helping students to form stronger schemata for long-term retention of knowledge.

Standards in teaching, learning and behaviour are exemplary and the school has a range of strategies such as vertical tutoring and an extensive range of extra-curricular and enrichment activities that promote student potential.

We enjoy extremely strong links with parents, the vast majority of whom are highly supportive of the school and engage fully in the development of their child's learning.

The local Governing Body of Arthur Terry are a very highly-skilled, astute and intelligent group of people who offer real support for the school based on informed judgements and robust yet fair challenge and support. Their effectiveness was rated Outstanding in both separate Ofsted inspections.

Academic success is important to us, but it is also important for us to acknowledge that schools are about more than excellent examination results. Whilst we want our children to succeed, we also want them to be happy, to enjoy coming to school and to thrive and participate fully in all that we have to offer, both in lessons and in the wider curriculum.  Our school is about developing, in partnership with parents, rounded, responsible, caring young adults who contribute to the society that they live in.

As you can see, we all feel passionately about The Arthur Terry School.  Come and visit us and see for yourself!
