I teach IGCSE Geography at an international school in Southeast Asia. This was one of my best-selling lessons, and while the geography of site and situation hasn’t changed, the world it teaches has. So I rebuilt it from scratch: the four city case studies refreshed, Liverpool’s story brought up to date, and a new real-world section on the two countries building brand new cities from nothing right now. What’s in it:
A complete, ready-to-teach lesson on settlement patterns, site, situation and function, built around one big question: if you could build a town anywhere, where should it go, and why? Students land on the uninhabited island of Utopia, learn the geography, then return at the end to choose a site and defend it. You get a full PowerPoint presentation with answers included throughout.

• The three rural settlement patterns: nucleated, linear and dispersed
• The difference between site and situation, and how to stop confusing them
• The physical and human factors that made a site attractive to settlers

The case studies are refreshed to the latest available figures, and the closing section makes the classroom task real: Saudi Arabia’s 170-km linear city in the desert, paused in 2025 with only a fraction built, and Indonesia’s move away from a Jakarta that is sinking up to 25 cm a year to a purpose-built capital in Borneo. Also suitable for AP Human Geography, World Geography, and any settlement, urban or human geography unit at ages 11-16.
