Uppingham School is seeking an experienced Chaplain to lead the religious and spiritual life of the school.

The successful candidate will play a pivotal role supporting all members of the community in developing their character, beliefs, and practical responses to personal, moral, practical, and existential questions. 

Being Chaplain at Uppingham is no easy task. The incumbent needs to have the intellectual and emotional intelligence to create an atmosphere where everyone in our school feels welcome. 

Our Chapel is intrinsic to the process of creating our collective spirit of warmth. Being able to gather together five times a week as a whole school is an immense privilege. 

More broadly, the Chaplain has a wonderful opportunity to be a key part of our pastoral life. Ultimately, the Chaplain is part of a team who will help young people become the positive change the world needs.

Uppingham School is a mixed, Church of England independent secondary school with sixth form and boarding, located in Leicestershire. The secondary school, situated in Uppingham has approximately 791 students on record.

Uppingham School was founded in 1584, originally as a school for boys. In 1975 girls were admitted, and it became fully co-educational as of 2001. The majority of students attending the secondary school are boarders.

Extra-curricular activities are encouraged for pupils to gain experience outside of the classroom across sport, theatre and the arts. “Pupils demonstrate positive attitudes towards work and study. They have good literacy skills at all ages and articulate ideas and opinions fluently. Work is generally presented neatly and pupils’ note-taking is effective. They develop good numeracy skills and their capacity to think critically is notable. Creative abilities are well developed and their exploration of ideas is particularly marked in their enrichment activities. Pupils’ study habits are good. In the lessons observed, pupils worked very well with each other, and also worked well independently. They enjoy their work and this stems in part from the good-natured atmosphere in lessons. Pupils use information and communications technology (ICT) proficiently.”
