Job overview

The principle role of the Technician is to provide and support all aspects of the practical work associated with the teaching of Chemistry throughout St Leonards School. The Technician is a member of the support staff responsible to the Head of Chemistry.

Responsible for the setup and dismantling of experiments, the Chemistry Technician collaborates with the Chemistry teachers to enhance practical learning experiences. Precision in chemical solution preparation, equipment calibration, and adherence to safety protocols are paramount to the role. The post-holder will help to foster an environment that inspires student curiosity and promotes hands-on exploration in the field of chemistry. In addition, the Technician will undertake additional responsibilities across the whole Science department. The post-holder should be meticulous in all matters of Health and Safety regarding the trialling and set up of experiments and classroom activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide practical assistance and support in the preparation and the use of equipment and materials for lessons, including their safe transit between work areas that meet both safety standards and the requirements of the classes involved.
  • Assist in the design and development of practical activities including the setting up and maintenance of specialist resources and longer term research projects. Trial practical activities, as appropriate, for use in, for example, IB coursework, extended essay laboratory work, Group 4 project work and GCSE investigations etc.
  • Safely dispose of chemicals and other materials in accordance with Health and Safety procedures, taking appropriate and timely action in respect of real and potential hazards.
  • Safely store equipment and materials ensuring that suitable and sufficient stocks are available and that accurate stock ! control and supplier databases are maintained
  • Ensure timely and effective checking, maintenance, calibration, cleaning and fault investigation of equipment.
  • Compile orders, liaise and negotiate with suppliers in conjunction with budget constraints and financial guidelines.
