Job overview

Deputy Head (Pastoral)

Highgate School seeks to appoint a Deputy Head (Pastoral) to start in September 2019. Mr Todd Lindsay, the Principal Deputy Head, has assumed safeguarding and pastoral line-management responsibilities for several years but the creation of this additional senior leadership post will allow him to relinquish these duties in order to focus on a range of other tasks and responsibilities. The new Deputy Head (Pastoral) will report directly to the Head.

Highgate is a flourishing co-educational day school in North London, comprising the Senior School, Junior School and Pre-Preparatory School. It celebrated its 450th anniversary in 2015. Working at Highgate offers the opportunity to be part of a vibrant and welcoming community which is proud of its partnership work in local state schools. Highgate is the principal educational sponsor of a new sixth form academy, the London Academy of Excellence Tottenham which opened in September 2017 .

We are looking for an inspirational individual who will combine high standards of personal integrity, outstanding teaching and consummate efficiency with strong leadership, in particular, inter-personal skills, incisive and effective quality control and an ability to articulate and implement a vision for Safeguarding and Pastoral Care which builds on and develops Highgate's strong reputation in these areas.

Candidates are likely to be natural leaders able to create harmonious and productive working relationships.

The role would suit someone aiming to run his or her own school in due course, and the post-holder will be one of four senior leaders deputising for the Head in his absence. The key attributes will however be the strength and skill to enable the highest quality of pastoral care for the pupils. Superb pastoral care and safeguarding vigilance underpins all of Highgate's aims: to be a place for learning and scholarship, to be a reflective community and to be an exemplar for the healthy life.

The role

The Deputy Head (Pastoral) will be a member, with the Head, the Bursar, the three other Deputy Heads, and the Principal of the Pre-Preparatory and Junior Schools, of the Strategy and Management Committee (SMC). The SMC oversees the School’s development plan and develops the strategic vision for the School.

Highgate’s senior leadership is strongly collegiate, innovative and self-critical in character. Each post-holder has clearly defined areas of delegated responsibility and the space to lead, but is expected to work collaboratively so that educational quality, pupils' personal development and welfare are balanced and linked.

The Deputy Head (Pastoral) role will be the Designated Safeguarding Lead in the Senior School.

Person specification

Highgate is looking for an able graduate teacher with a track-record of success in either a middle-management or senior management role in an independent or state school. Applicants will need to show their understanding of the challenges inherent in this substantial but rewarding position, and the human and professional qualities necessary to carry out their responsibilities successfully.

Qualifications

· a good honours degree in or closely related to a subject taught at Highgate

About Highgate School

Established in 1565, Highgate is now one of the UK’s leading co-educational independent schools, with around 1,700 pupils aged 3-18.

Academic excellence

Academic standards at Highgate remain high, as our most recent exam results demonstrate. In 2023 over 50% of all our GCSE entries were graded 9, and 78.9% were 9 or 8. Within our Sixth Form, in 2023, 46.5% of all our exam entries were awarded an A* at A level (or Pre-U equivalent) and 82.8% were A* or A. In 2023, 30 pupils matriculated at either Cambridge or Oxford colleges, whilst others took up places at prestigious Art, Architecture and Medical schools. Every year, the vast majority of our leavers enter Russell Group universities or other elite Higher Education establishments, including in the US and Canada.

Beyond the classroom

Alongside their studies, Highgate pupils are offered a wide range of co-curricular activities which enhance both their childhood experience and their future aspirations. We are also exceptionally fortunate when it comes to sport with extensive facilities, excellent staff and a wide range of activities available.

At Highgate, we encourage social responsibility through our charity work, both locally and further afield. For example, we are the principal education sponsor for the London Academy of Excellence Tottenham and support Great Lakes High School in Uganda.

Location

Our School is situated in one of the most attractive and popular areas of North London, a short distance from central London and adjacent to Hampstead Heath. We endeavour to be a sustainable school and are well served by good public transport links.

Management

Our Head, Mr Adam Pettitt, leads our Senior School and is also responsible for the overall direction of our Pre-Preparatory and Junior Schools.
