Emanuel School is a co-educational independent secondary day school in Wandsworth, London, with just over 900 pupils. We aim to balance academic excellence with the provision of supportive pastoral care and a wide range of co-curricular activities across the arts and sports.
Our Director of Music will deliver the entire musical programme at Emanuel and integrate this programme seamlessly into the very busy academic and co-curricular life of the school. Working closely with the Assistant Director of Music, who currently has delegated responsibility for the music curriculum and its requirements, the successful candidate will lead a team of three full-time academic staff, a music administrator, and around twenty visiting music teachers.
The ideal candidate will combine the specialist knowledge to provide excellent teaching at GCSE, AS and A2 level with management skills, organisational skills and leadership to head up this flagship department. The appointee will be a well-qualified and experienced musician – but most importantly they will have the passion to build on the existing excellent standards in music at Emanuel, and to have the highest expectations of what can be achieved in terms of academic outcomes, levels of pupil participation and the profile of music in school and beyond.

Welcome to Emanuel. We are a fully co-ed school of over 1000 pupils, aged 10-18, with over 200 teaching and support staff colleagues.
We are an ambitious community. This summer, 87% of grades at GCSE were awarded 9-7, which is a lift of 37% across recent years. Our A Level A*-A percentage is 53%. This is 20% higher than in 2018 and the school is now recognised as one of the best for academic outcomes in the country. The recent ISI Inspection report noted that: “Pupils make excellent progress across the range of subjects and significant value is added to their academic outcomes.”
We are committed to developing all our major sports and value pupil participation as well as team and individual achievement. The school’s critical build plan will see a significant investment in our on and off-site sports facilities across the next 3-4 years. The same site plan will support the outstanding creative and performing arts teaching at the school, as the school’s plans for a large specialist science teaching block will also allow us to improve our facilities for music and drama, both areas of traditional strength. We were delighted that these areas were recognised in last year’s Independent School of the Year Awards when we won the award for our performing arts.
Beyond the classroom, we have a thriving partnerships programme, helping to develop our pupils at all ages as they participate in this work, and benefiting the local community, with over 1000 primary school children coming to use our site and work with our pupils each month. In 2021 we won the Independent School of the Year Award for our community outreach work.
