Job overview

King’s College London Mathematics School (KCLMS) promotes a sense of belonging and nurtures the natural talent of students with a particular aptitude and enthusiasm for mathematics. The school aims to widen participation in mathematical degrees and careers at the very best universities and institutions.

Sponsored by King’s College London, it is a small school of up to 150 students that recognises there are many talented students who enjoy and are good at mathematics who could benefit from being part of the KCLMS mathematical community.

The Head Teacher is seeking to appoint a dynamic and inspirational teacher, leader and manager to play a central role in defining, articulating and implementing the outreach and widening participation missions of the school. They will take direct accountability for the development and delivery of all outreach projects and will lead a substantial expansion of the current outreach activity from September 2021. As an associate member of the Senior Leadership Team they will demonstrate outstanding leadership skills in working with the Head Teacher on the implementation of the strategic direction of the school.

The postholder will take on additional whole school duties that are in line with their overall remit. These will include oversight of the school’s marketing work as it pertains to admissions, all with a view to widen participation at the school; senior responsibility for equality and diversity across all aspects of the school’s work; and strategic oversight of the school’s alumni network.

This post represents an interesting opportunity for a knowledgeable and passionate educationalist who has experience of working in a school to take on an enterprising, broad-ranging role that has the potential for significant impact on young people with an enthusiasm for mathematics.

The directorship post is a part-time post (0.6-0.8FTE, or 3-4 days per week). For the appropriately qualified and skilled candidate there is the opportunity to extend the post to a full time post by teaching one of the core subjects delivered by the school (mathematics, physics, computer science or economics).

The successful candidate for this post will have a strong academic background in the mathematical sciences, will be able to demonstrate engagement in widening participation activity and will already have a proven record of leadership and management. Whilst experience of working in a school is preferred, they may come to the role from a different sector or context. A vital qualification will be that they share the vision of the school to help talented and motivated young people find challenge and excitement in a curriculum that fosters intellectual growth and curiosity.

The post will commence on 1 September 2021, or later by arrangement.

Closing date: 12:00 on Friday 9 July

Interviews will be held on: Thursday 15 July
