Job purpose

We are seeking a Director of the Commercial Music Course & Head of Music to join our thriving vocational team. The successful candidate will be expected to lead the provision of music in the school, managing a team of staff and providing artistic direction for the course and performances, and ensuring successful outcomes for our talented students.

 

School

Tring Park School is a co-educational boarding and day school based in Hertfordshire, UK, educating and training young people from the age of 7 to 19. Pupils receive rigorous training in the performing arts, that is combined with an extensive academic programme of study. From Year 7, pupils can specialise in either Dance or Performance Foundation, with the option to focus on Dance, Commercial Music, Musical Theatre or Acting at Sixth Form level.

Department

The music department is responsible for the delivery of music across the school to all pupils from ages 7 – 18.

Our Commercial Music course is one of four specialist pathways that the school offers at Sixth form level. The course offers pre-professional training to pupils in performance, production and song writing. Graduates from the course are consistently successful in gaining entry to higher education courses and ultimately forging careers in the music industry.

All pupils in year 3 – 9 study music and are all part of a choir. Pupils in year 10 and 11 can opt to study GCSE music and at A-level the school offers both A-level Music and A-level Music Technology. There are a number of musical and choral ensemble opportunities available for pupils throughout the week as well as the opportunity to take peripatetic lessons in a range of instruments and voice.

 

Main Duties

  • To be responsible for the running of the Music Department and the delivery of the music curriculum throughout the school. 
  • To act as a course leader for the schools’ commercial music course. To be the main point of contact for pupils and parents and to support their wellbeing and vocational progress. To provide artistic direction for the course and performances.
  • To liaise with other Heads of Department to facilitate the harmonious working together of all areas

 

Person Specification

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent qualification and/or significant experience in the performing arts.
  • Experience of managing staff.
  • Experience of teaching in a performing arts setting, with a passion for ensuring excellence in teaching, learning and training.
  • Experience of providing artistic guidance to staff in the department.
  • Excellent communication/interpersonal skills.
  • Experience of managing budgets/resourcing.
  • Strong administration skills with the ability to juggle multiple tasks.
  • Experience of monitoring and assessing in an education setting.
