About Outwood Normanby

We are a diverse and vibrant 11-16 academy, based in the friendly, north-east town of Middlesbrough.

We are a welcoming and supportive academy, with a relentless determination to provide the very best education for every child. We place students at the centre of everything we do, with a focus on creating a culture of success and a positive climate for learning.

The Academy became part of the Outwood Family of Schools in 2019 and as a member of the Outwood Family we believe in putting Students First, raising standards and transforming lives.

All about Normanby Geography Department

The Geography department at Outwood Academy Normanby consists of 2 full time, experienced members of staff - both of whom are geographers. Our curriculum and teaching benefits from their strong geographical knowledge and expertise. We are a friendly department who work tirelessly for our students to give them the best possible geographical experience they can. As staff, we take full advantage of the subject specific CPD on offer from the trust to constantly improve our curriculum and teaching practice.

We are housed in 2 dedicated geography classrooms, directly opposite each other. This means that we are close to one another to offer support. Both classrooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards.

All students follow a three-year programme of study from Year 7 to Year 9. Year 7 study geography for 2 hours per week, with 1 hour in Year 8 and 2 again in Year 9. We believe that we are developing a strong curriculum at KS3 which provides our students with a challenging, relevant, and engaging curriculum. We believe in opening our students' eyes to the world whilst helping them understand their local geography. We study topics ranging from our exploitation of the oceans to the economy of Teesside, but all of our learning is centred around the five core concepts of sustainability, human and physical interactions, physical processes, climate change and development. We are currently increasing the amount of GIS at KS3 and post-Covid, we have big plans for KS3 fieldwork to increase the opportunities available to our students.

We have a healthy number of students choosing to study GCSE Geography during Year 10 and 11. Our students’ study AQA Geography and take part in two required field trips - one to study longshore drift in Redcar and the other to investigate housing inequality in Middlesbrough. The units we cover are Paper 1: Natural Hazards, Living World (Hot Deserts), Coasts and Rivers; Paper 2: Urban, Economic Change; Resource Management and Water; Paper 3: Pre-Release and Fieldwork.

We work closely with our colleagues in the History department to promote the importance of the humanities to our students.

We would love to hear from teachers interested in creating a warm, interesting and inclusive learning environment, where students feel safe and inspired. Are you dedicated, with a sense of humour? Are you keen to work with a team on planning great learning experiences and contributing to a culture of improvement and development? Our academy is the place for you!

The right candidate will be able to make a significant difference to the lives of our students and share our single goal of ‘Students First Raising Standards and Transforming Lives’. We positively welcome applications from all sections of the community, who love Geography and have a passion to develop this in others. You could progress quickly across our Family of Schools if that was what you were looking for, through leadership or through our Deeps structure; but, if you just want to be the best Geography teacher you can be, then we are also the school for you!
