Job overview

Boarding sits at the heart of life at Charterhouse – almost everyone boards here. Each House has a friendly, enthusiastic and dedicated team of staff on hand to support and guide pupils.

All pupils are under the care of their resident Head of House, who is their day-to-day mentor and is responsible for looking after them throughout their time at Charterhouse.

We currently have a vacancy for two Heads of Houses to take responsibility for a girls’ house (Sutton) and a house which is in the process of transitioning from a boys’ to a girls’ house (Girdlestoneites).

SUTTON

Founded in 2019, Sutton, a girls’ house, is named after Thomas Sutton, the founder of Charterhouse. Located in one of the original buildings at the heart of the School. Sutton combines the splendour of the Victorian gothic with a newly-refurbished welcoming and contemporary interior. The ‘private side’ was originally designed by the first headmaster of Charterhouse in Godalming, William Haig Brown, when the School moved from London in 1872. The House forms part of Founder’s Court and is adjacent to the central café Oak, in Scholar’s Court, where the girls and boys in ‘Old School’ have their meals. It is home to approximately 70 girls, and from 2023 will have girls in every year group in the school.

GIRDLESTONEITES

Frederick Girdlestone (Old Carthusian) founded Girdlestonites in 1874, having been associated with the School since 1853. He first became the Housemaster of Gownboys and on his move to Girdlestoneites persuaded a dozen Gownboys to join him in his new House. The ‘Duck’, as he was affectionately known because of his peculiar gait (hence the commonly used name of the House: Duckites), retired in 1912. Girdlestoneites (originally a boys' House) will be welcoming girls from September 2023, becoming a coeducational House as part of a phased conversion to a girls' only House from September 2026, when it will house approximately 65 girls. Over the coming few years, both boys and girls will benefit from the experience of a coeducational boarding environment with some shared amenities and common rooms alongside the girls' and boys' only areas. Girdlestoneites is located in the centre of the School, close to the teaching facilities and the central café Oak,  where the girls and boys have their meals.

Charterhouse offers a competitive salary and other benefits including a contributory pension scheme through the Teachers' Pension Scheme, and membership of the School’s Sports Club.

Applications should be made in accordance with the School’s application and safer recruitment procedures, via the School’s website, selecting the relevant vacancy. The closing time and date for applications is 12 noon on Monday 30 January 2023.

Interviews will take place shortly after the closing date.

The post-holder will be responsible for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children with whom he/she comes into contact. They must ensure compliance with the School's Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy Statement at all times. This appointment will be subject to checks with the Disclosure and Barring Service and with past employers.
