Contact: Full time

Contract term: Permanent

Avonside Girls’ High School, an all-girls state secondary school located in Christchurch, is looking for a future-focused leader to join the team as Head of the mathematics learning area, and to work with other curriculum leaders across the school to embed the school vision that Learning is for everyone.

Make use of your professional knowledge, leadership and understanding to foster a culture of collaboration and growth and create a stimulating, challenging and supportive learning environment that promotes student engagement and achievement.

Established over 80 years ago, the school has a well-established history and a sense of pride in girls’ state education in Christchurch. The board, senior leaders and staff are strongly committed to providing high quality pastoral support for girls that promotes learning and achievement. A wide range of sporting and cultural opportunities within and beyond the school encourages increased engagement and extends learning and enjoyment for students.

In 2019 the school moved to brand new state of the art premises, co-located with Shirley Boys’ High School. This is the best of both worlds, as they offer quality single sex learning and retain the culture and identity of the respective schools to provide opportunities to enhance learning. The modern facilities of the campus include spacious learning areas, a Performing Art Centre with two theatres, a Cultural space, sports fields, indoor Gymnasiums, and a Café and fully equipped commercial teaching kitchen. The schools share some of facilities, as well as compete in inter-school competitions, sports challenges and debates.

The successful teacher will have enthusiasm for inspiring and developing a love for mathematics in students, especially girls. You will be an innovative practitioner and use technology to ensure the best outcomes for all learners, including gifted. Experience teaching mathematics to senior level, and strengths in both statistics and calculus are preferred.

This role will commence 30 January 2023 as a preference or April 2023 by negotiation.

Applications close 27 December 2022. For an application pack email careteam@edperson.co.nz or call +64 4 9102212.

Values and vision

Avonside Girls’ High School wants to ensure that all girls are empowered and educated during their time learning, holding the knowledge, skills and experience to succeed in a modern and ever changing world. The school focuses on ensuring that all students reach their full potential in a supportive and positive learning environment. The four core values of respect, integrity, self-discipline and contribution are at the heart of the schools teachings and help to direct students in the right positive path on a daily basis. It is vital that all pupils are respectful and tolerant of each other, regardless of their differences. Students are taught to take pride in their school community and to wear their uniform with pride, while at the same time contributing positively to the community as active citizens. Students have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of extra-curricular activities to further enrich their learning, improve in confidence and meet new friends from other year groups and classes. These include many leadership opportunities, such as belonging to the School Council and becoming a Student Executive.
