The Children’s House

The Children’s House was set up in 1973 by a group of local parents, originally to provide high-quality early years education in Islington. Our Nursery is in Elmore Street and caters for children ranging in age from 2½ to 4, whilst the Upper School, a short distance away in King Henry’s Walk, currently offers Reception to Year 3 and is expanding to a full prep school in the coming years.

The school’s focus is on families and children, with a strong emphasis on pastoral care. Classes are small, and the school community is warm and friendly, with supportive parents and plenty of opportunities for teachers to get involved in whole school events.

Learning is individualised, with high teacher child ratios and importance placed on creativity. Whilst we are non-selective, pupils are all prepared for the 11+ and do very well academically.

Aims

The Children’s House aims to provide as broad and varied a physical education as possible, so all children, regardless of ability, enjoy and become enthusiastic about physical activity.  The ability to teach sport to our youngest children in the Nursery is important.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and dynamic sports teacher who can motivate and inspire all children in Physical Education, supporting every individual to reach their potential. Our Head of PE and Games will be able to work collaboratively with the staff team to raise the profile of sport and facilitate as many different opportunities as possible for pupils to get involved in sports, throughout the year. We are looking for a person who can quickly generate confidence and respect and who is capable of fostering highly positive working relationships with children, parents and colleagues.

We are currently considering the possibility of leasing a 16 seater minibus to transport pupils to offsite PE and would welcome candidates who would drive a minibus.

HEAD OF PE & GAMES

The Head of PE and Games will lead the sports provision throughout the School, from Nursery (2.5 year olds) to Year 5 (our first Year 5 class will be starting in Sept 2024).

The Children’s House School is a well-established nursery and pre-preparatory school in Islington, North London, currently welcoming children from 2.5 to 7 years of age. Our ethos is simple, we want each child to reach their full potential in a happy and nurturing environment, taught by excellent teachers. We are not an academic hot house but consistently achieve excellent academic results across all abilities through our unwavering dedication to each child and their individual learning style and needs.

In 2020, we announced our plan to expand The Children’s House in order to offer local preparatory education through to Year 6. Building on our past record of high academic achievement through creative, hands-on, theme-based learning, our ambition is to be the desired Prep School in Islington, preparing children for, and supporting parents through the London 11+ senior school entry process.

5 YEAR VISION

We are thrilled to be expanding The Children’s House School. Our leading, local, co-educational school will soon be educating children from Nursery up to Year 6.

The ultimate aim will be the creation of a dedicated Children’s House Early Years Learning Centre (Nursery, Pre-Reception and Reception from Sept 2024) at Elmore Street and a vibrant home for our Children’s House Preparatory School at King Henry’s Walk (Year 1 to Year 6).

Building on our record of high academic achievement and creative, hands-on learning, our key focus will be preparing children for, and supporting parents through the 11+ entry into senior schools in and around London.

Children will realise their potential through individualised teaching and a creative 11+ focused curriculum, linking subject areas through theme-based lessons. English and Maths will be taught separately, with an emphasis on problem-solving. Philosophy for Children will be introduced to provide opportunities for children to debate and form opinions; chess and Reasoning will form an important part of the curriculum from Year 3 onwards. Spanish will continue to be taught, as well as French and Latin for older children. Children will have access to tablets and laptops for research, recording and coding.

Our existing buildings will undergo extensive reorganisation, allowing us to accommodate an additional 60 pupils across our two sites. Each light-filled classroom will have state-of-the-art technology and specialised learning areas filled with high quality resources, ensuring children have the best preparation for their senior schools. We will use local facilities to provide large off-site sports, play and learning areas for children throughout school. In the Nursery School at Elmore Street, we will provide indoor/outdoor space for our youngest children.

We will continue our open-door policy for parents, providing expert guidance and support through the 11+ process. We will help parents to understand London’s notoriously competitive and complicated school system, providing clarity on what to look out for and do each school year. Parents will be given the very best tailored advice about the right schools for their children.
