Job overview

We are looking for an engaging and talented person to lead and inspire Science teaching across the whole school. A good investigative scientist who is an exceptional communicator, with a drive to broaden our children’s horizons and give them a hunger to explore the world.

Our thriving Science department prioritises hands on practical work in both of our fully equipped and well-resourced labs by using bespoke, personalised resources for each topic studied in the Upper School. Our team are committed to making Science the talking point of school life and the wider community. Science assemblies and demonstrations are routinely performed throughout the school to all year groups. Beyond Pennthorpe, we even take Science into local primary schools and run Parent Forensic CSI sessions as part of our showpiece Science Spotlight Weeks. The school has won the prestigious ‘Superbugs’ competition for the last two years showing the department really is thriving. Science Engagement and Enrichment sessions fire the enthusiasm of our pupils in addition to the excitement offered by our Space Days, Carnival Day, Pirate Day and Bring Your Parent to School Days!

The holder has the key task of leading, monitoring and managing (including budgetary) the teaching and learning throughout the school in the Science department. They will play a crucial role in ensuring parity in academic delivery across the forms.

Pennthorpe is a co-educational independent preparatory day school located in the village of Rudgwick, along the Surrey/Sussex border, for children ages 2 to 13 years. Pennthorpe sits within a beautiful 25-acre site with extensive facilities and 16 acres of luscious woodland.

Pennthorpe is renowned for an innovative curriculum, exceptional pastoral care, immaculate, child-friendly campus and exceptional record for Scholarships and Common Entrance results. “Non nobis solum nati” is Pennthorpe’s official motto: “Born not for ourselves alone”. The ‘Pennthorpe Purpose’ relays the importance of positive contribution to the lives, and for the benefit, of others - not just to serve our own intentions. The children enjoy the most compelling educational experience possible; to nurture their positivity, tolerance, resilience and collaboration; and to prepare them to pursue their individual aspirations and contribute to the world.

Whether it’s academic achievement, consideration and kindness towards others, or an energetic and positive attitude – excellence underpins all that we do at Pennthorpe, and all that we strive to be together. Pennthorpe has been successfully preparing children for a variety of public senior schools since 1930.
