Job overview

Number on Roll: 588

Set in the Yorkshire Dales and with strong community support, Settle College is a successful secondary school of 588 students, including 80 in the Sixth Form. With well qualified staff, there are strong outcomes for all our students, and an excellent track record of university placement.

Salary: L25 - L31 £71,053 - £82,293

We pride ourselves on offering all our students the opportunity for high academic achievement, vocational opportunities and personal fulfilment through a wide range of curricular and extra-curricular activities. Currently, we are rated as Good by Ofsted (November 2015).

Four terms ago our previous Head joined Ofsted and a decision was taken to enter an arrangement with Upper Wharfedale school to share their Headteacher for an interim four term period while further structural collaboration was investigated.

During this interim period, great strides have been made in defining roles, refining the SLT structure and strengthening pastoral care while maintaining continuity and momentum in all aspects of the school’s life.

In the longer term neither academisation nor collaboration are ruled out (indeed the latter will be actively sought and is part of the strategic focus of this role), but this must be achieved from a strong sustainable position. To this end governors have set a strategic finance and development plan, which will underpin a secure long term future for high quality secondary and Post 16 education in Settle.

With support from an able Governing Body this position represents a real opportunity to make a significant impact in a school which has clearly identified objectives and a real desire to achieve. You will need the presence, ambition and expertise to deliver strong, clear leadership, raising expectations across the school community and building on our development plan. Financially astute, you will also build partnerships, influence thinking and effectively manage resources while maintaining the caring culture of the school.

We greatly welcome visits, and if you would like to do so please contact Hayley Kellett, Finance & HR Manager on 01729 822451 ext.268, or email H.Kellett@settlecollege.n-yorks.sch.uk, to make an appointment. Dates when we can accommodate visits are detailed below: if these are not possible for you please contact us and we may be able to offer alternatives.

Key dates:

  • School visits: Monday 17 & Tuesday 18 September
  • Closing date for applications: Midnight, Wednesday 26 September
  • Shortlisting: Tuesday 2 October
  • Interviews:  Monday 15 & Tuesday 16 October

Settle College is an 11-18 comprehensive school. Founded in 1907 as Settle Girls’ High School, in 1959 we became Settle High School, one of the first comprehensive schools in the UK. Our name changed again to Settle College in 2004 when the school gained Technology College status.  At Settle College, high quality teaching and learning is at the heart of everything we do, combined with exceptional pastoral support to meet the individual needs of every student. We place a strong emphasis on high standards of behaviour, respect and courtesy. Our innovative Key Stage 4 curriculum allows students the opportunity to study a wide range of GCSE and vocational courses from Year 9 onwards. Values and Vision

Settle College is a place of innovation and creativity, where all children are encouraged to uphold their highest academic abilities at the same time as enjoying their time studying in a vibrant and successful school. Thanks to its smaller size than many secondary schools, it treats each of its students as individuals, ensuring that their personalities, skills and talents are used to make the school the diverse and thriving educational environment that it is.

Ofsted

"The leadership team has maintained the good quality of education in the school since the last inspection. Since your appointment as Headteacher in November 2018, you have led the school with vision and vigour and a real sense of moral purpose. Working with staff and governors, you have quickly and effectively established a culture and ways of working that have helped address the uncertainties that had led to a dip in quality of some aspects of the school’s work. Because of your actions and approach, the school is very much back on track and is making strong progress."
