Job overview
Walthamstow Hall was founded in 1838 as an inter-denominational school for the daughters of Christian missionaries and retains its Christian ethos and friendly family atmosphere. It offers an all-through education through its two schools - a Junior School for girls from ‘rising 3’ -11 and a Senior School for girls aged 11-18. The Junior School currently has around 180 girls on roll and the Senior School around 430. It has always been an aim of the school to promote an intelligent understanding of the Christian faith and the school welcomes girls of all faiths. Both schools enjoy idyllic settings on separate sites and specialise in providing a high quality academic day school education for girls in the heart of Sevenoaks.
The Junior School Head, Mrs Diane Wood, was appointed from September 2013 and is a member of IAPS. As well as leading the well-qualified Junior School staff, the Head of Junior School is a key member of the whole school Senior Management Group, and the Senior School enjoys membership of GSA.
Miss Stephanie Ferro, the Headmistress, took up her post in January 2018, having worked in Senior Leadership in a number of schools including The Lady Eleanor Holles School, Wimbledon High School and Redland High School.
The majority of girls enter the happy and lively Junior School community in the Nursery or Reception and others may join in different year groups depending on availability of places. The majority of girls from our Junior School progress to the Senior School at 11+ following success in assessment tests, and are joined by girls from 20 or so local feeder schools at that point; a minority may move to other local day/boarding independent schools and a few to Grammar Schools. The excellent standards they achieve are reflected in a good number of scholarships being offered each year.
The Junior School has around 17 full-time and 9 part-time teaching staff, including 9 classroom assistants. There are specialist teachers for Science, Music, Art & DT, French, PE, Swimming and Ballet. The Junior School boasts excellent facilities including a Science laboratory, an ICT suite, an Art room and separate Music block. In May 2014, a new Dining Hall and Early Years classroom were opened.
The School’s setting includes picturesque grounds with rhododendrons and pine trees, an adventure playground and two Netball/Tennis courts. It is also able to benefit from the Senior School facilities including a 25-metre indoor swimming pool, new Sports Centre/Hall and theatre. The main building has a very homely feel where a sense of tradition is complemented by more modern facilities. The broad curriculum is enriched by outings, visits and a wide range of extra-curricular clubs. At both the Junior School and Senior School there is a strong commitment to the educational benefits of enrichment activities and the personal development of pupils.
Walthamstow Hall has its own enhanced salary scale based on Df E scales. Accommodation may be available.
We are seeking a well-qualified and inspirational Form Teacher for Key Stage 2. As a member of the Senior Management Team, the Deputy Head will support the Head in leading this successful and flourishing school for 185 girls aged 3-11.
Full details of this position, together with an application form, are available by emailing the Headmistress’s PA, Ms Kate Lippiatt: hmpa@whall.school (Telephone 01732 451334)
Closing date for applications: Tuesday 6 March
