Job overview

Exeter School is the leading co-educational day school in the South West, educating over 1,000 pupils aged 3-18.  The School is seeking to appoint a dedicated and enthusiastic Language Assistant (French). The successful candidate will have native expertise in French and be fluent in English, and ideally have some experience working in schools. They will demonstrate a passion for their subject and have knowledge of the social and cultural elements of the French language.

This is a fixed term, part-time, term-time only position. The number of hours is determined by the number of pupils choosing to study French and is predicted to be 10–11 hours for the next academic year, which is equivalent to approximately 2 days.

The role will attract a competitive salary, as well as generous benefits including free school lunch during term time, school fee remission, free on-site parking, access to school sporting facilities, an 8% employer contribution to the school’s approved pension scheme and membership of the school’s health cash plan.

Closing date for applications is noon on Thursday 21 May 2026, with an aim for interviews to be held W/C June 1 2026.

Applications must include a completed Exeter School application form. For safeguarding purposes, a CV alone is not sufficient.

The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment and responsibility. Applicants will be required to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.

All staff working in the school during the school day will have some contact with children and will therefore be in regulated activity. In your role you are likely to be regularly working directly with, and be responsible for, children in your care.

The post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and the school is therefore permitted to ask job applicants to declare all convictions and cautions (including those which are "spent" unless they are "protected" under the DBS filtering rules) in order to assess their suitability to work with children.

Note on Sponsorship: We regret to inform you that, we are unable to offer sponsorship for work authorisation for this role. Therefore, candidates must possess valid authorisation to work in the UK without requiring visa sponsorship.
