Described by Lord Coe at its opening as ‘world class’, Uppingham School Sports Centre (USSC) is a dual use facility for both Uppingham School and the local community. Since 2010 we have been growing and increasing access to local residents, sports clubs and external schools. As we continue to increase participation, Leisure Assistants and Assistant Swimming Teachers will play a vital role in ensuring Sports Centre users can enjoy our facilities safely and learn valuable lifesaving skills.

USSC is managed and run on behalf of the School by Uppingham School Enterprises Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary, and employs c. 40 full- and part-time staff. The centre has a strong team ethos and each member shares a passion for fitness and delivering a first class experience. Uppingham School is a mixed, Church of England independent secondary school with sixth form and boarding, located in Leicestershire. The secondary school, situated in Uppingham has approximately 791 students on record.

Uppingham School was founded in 1584, originally as a school for boys. In 1975 girls were admitted, and it became fully co-educational as of 2001. The majority of students attending the secondary school are boarders.

“Pupils demonstrate positive attitudes towards work and study. They have good literacy skills at all ages and articulate ideas and opinions fluently. Work is generally presented neatly and pupils’ note-taking is effective. They develop good numeracy skills and their capacity to think critically is notable. Creative abilities are well developed and their exploration of ideas is particularly marked in their enrichment activities. Pupils’ study habits are good. In the lessons observed, pupils worked very well with each other, and also worked well independently. They enjoy their work and this stems in part from the good-natured atmosphere in lessons. Pupils use information and communications technology (ICT) proficiently.”
