Job overview

Godstowe School is an independent day and boarding school for girls age 3 to 13. We have approximately 400 girls with a community of about 80 boarders from the UK as well as other countries around the world, adding an important international and multicultural dimension to the school.

We are looking for a talented musician and teacher to join our thriving Music Department. The post holder will teach across the school from Reception to Year 8 and in addition will be our accompanist in residence for choirs, recitals and examinations so a high level of keyboard skills is required.

Music is a central part of Godstowe life. Not only is there regular music available for all children in class and regular singing practice, there are six ensembles, choirs for all ages and chamber music coaching. Over 75% of children take instrumental and vocal lessons.

We cater for all abilities with every child given the opportunity to perform. We hold monthly solo student recitals and termly whole-school concerts. This is an exciting time to join the Godstowe Music Department as we are currently planning a showpiece event for our 125th Anniversary.

Girls reach the highest grades of ABRSM with Distinctions at ARSM level achieved. They also achieve scholarships and exhibitions to senior schools such as Cheltenham Ladies’ College, Queen Anne’s School Wellington and Wycombe Abbey.

Our facilities include a purpose built Music School with teaching and practice rooms and a Music ICT suite; a Recital Hall; and main School theatre. Girls enjoy a wide range of external events including visits to the Central Band of the Royal Air Force, the annual Choir Tour, participation in Young Voices, and orchestral collaborations with Senior Schools.

The post will equate to approximately 0.40-0.50 WTE over 4-5 days to allow for the accompanist in residence role in addition to teaching and support to the Director of Music. Benefits include a competitive salary, pension, fee discount for eligible children, and meals in term time.

Godstowe is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Applicants will be required to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.

Something Special is happening at Godstowe

Godstowe was founded by two strong, progressive women, originally in fact as a school whose purpose would be to prepare girls for the move down the hill to Wycombe Abbey School. Their vision was for an innovative, academic and broad education for girls and, without a doubt, this continues to live on in today’s school.

Our ethos is simple. All we want is for our girls and boys to be Confident, Happy and Successful. Indeed, if the first two are true, the third will almost certainly follow. Success is defined in many ways, and we mean successful in the broadest sense: successfully kind, successfully courteous as well as successful in achieving a wide range of goals. We keep our pupils busy and engaged, we entertain and intrigue them, encourage them, and excite them. Happy children are easy to teach.

With outstanding, highly qualified teaching staff as well as a strong and experienced pastoral team, excellent facilities, wonderful surroundings, a non-selective intake policy and a more positive, exuberant and industrious atmosphere than you will find in other schools, it is likely that most of our children will be happy to learn, happy to stretch themselves, happy to support each other, and happy to do whatever they can to take an active part in their own education. Why push children through the curriculum when they can be inspired to make their own journey, choose their own routes and arrive at their destination under their own steam?

Our pupils love their time at school. It never ceases to amaze me just how much highly motivated and enthusiastic people can willingly contribute, and we don’t just mean the girls and boys, we mean the staff and the parents too! Godstowe is alive with opportunity. Remember, to learn a lesson you need to live it.
