Havelock has a distinguished history, serving generations of students as a grammar school, a comprehensive and now as an academy.

At Havelock we want all of our students to achieve well academically and we take great pains to ensure that we have an appropriately broad and balanced curriculum and pastoral structures. The links between the pastoral care, academic achievement and outstanding enrichment opportunities are designed to enable every student to reach his or her potential. Our teachers plan their curriculum collaboratively, developing a vibrant learning community in state-of-the-art buildings.

The David Ross Education Trust is a not-for-profit Multi-Academy Trust that runs a growing network of primary and secondary schools in Scarborough, Bridlington, Hull, Grimsby, Lincolnshire, Leicestershire, Northampton, Daventry, and London.  DRET academies serve over 14,000 students, and their families.

We are looking for new governors to support Havelock Academy. Our governors work closely with their academies to support the Trust’s goal of broadening the horizons of young people through a world-class education, equipping our students with the skills and experiences to become their confident, academic best, no matter what.


Becoming a governor is an excellent form of volunteering and can be a really rewarding and stimulating experience. Imagine having a very real part to play in ensuring the children at your academy get the best possible education. Think of the satisfaction of raising standards and achieving improvements for the school.

There's plenty of opportunity to learn new skills, working with others to help benefit the education of children. The role may sound formal, but governors play a vital role in the running of the school and most people enjoy their time as a governor, as well as appreciating the sense of duty and opportunity to show loyalty to their school. You may also progress to being a chair, which brings added responsibility. The experiences of school governorship look great on any CV, and can even create career opportunities

It is important to have governors reflective (but not necessarily representatives) of the community a school serves. Diversity can help with better scrutiny and decision making in the interests of pupils. We welcome governors from a diverse range of backgrounds, skills and experience to join our team.

About Havelock Academy

Located in the town of Grimsby, Lincolnshire, Havelock Academy is a co-educational secondary school. Havelock has around 1000 pupils aged 11-18, making it slightly larger than the average secondary school. The school has an economically diverse catchment area, a fact reflected in its student intake. Originally known as Havelock school, it was established in the 1960s, adopting its current name in 2007 upon its conversion to an academy. The school is part of the David Ross Education Trust, a multi-academy trust responsible for a large number of schools across the Midlands and the north of England.

Havelock Academy works closely with its numerous partner primary schools, as well as the David Ross Education Trust, in order to provide the best possible range of opportunities for its pupils and to properly manage their move into secondary school with the bare minimum of disruption. The school sets a high academic and behavioural standard for its students to strive towards, with the motto, "Broadening Horizons" at the heart of all aspects of academy life. There is a strong enrichment programme to support the trust-wide curriculum and provide students with a wide range of opportunities in and out of the classroom.  Teacher CPD is embedded into the timetable, with a range of internal and external programmes available for career development.
