Job Description- Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator

Job Title: Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO)

Location:  ISL, Surrey

Hours:  Full time

Holiday:  School Holidays

Reporting to: ISL School Leader

To work in the strategic development of the school's Special Educational Needs (SEN) policy whilst overseeing the day-to-day SEN support operations with the aim of raising achievement levels and supporting students with special needs.

Areas of responsibility and key tasks

  • Strategic Direction and Development of SEN provision in the School.
  • Support all  staff in understanding the needs of SEN students and ensure the objectives to develop SEN are reflected in the school improvement plan.
  • Monitor progress of objectives and targets for students with SEN from teachers' plans; evaluate the effectiveness of teaching and learning by work analysis and use these analyses to guide future improvements.
  • Liaise with staff, parents, external agencies and other schools to co-ordinate their      contribution, provide maximum support and ensure continuity of provision.
  • Provide support to individual students with special needs.

Teaching and Learning

  • Support the identification of the most effective teaching approaches for students with SEN and disseminate to other staff as appropriate
  • Work with staff to develop effective ways of bridging barriers to learning through:

- assessment of needs;

- monitoring of teaching quality and student achievement;

- target setting, including IEPs;

- developing a recording system for progress.

·  Collect and interpret specialist assessment data to inform practice.

·  Undertake day-to-day co-ordination of SEN students’ provisions through close liaison with staff, parents and external agencies.

·  Design and implement a range of teaching strategies for SEN students that could be utilised. 

Leading and managing 

· Provide professional guidance to staff to secure good teaching for SEN 

students, through both written guidance and meetings

·  Support classroom learning facilitators to ensure that students receive appropriate support

·  Advise on, and contribute to, the professional development of staff in the area of SEN teaching and learning and building a culture of individualised learning.

Effective deployment of staff and resources 

  • Advise the Principal of priorities for expenditure and deployment of staff, and utilise resources with maximum efficiency
  • Maintain and develop resources, co-ordinate their deployment and monitor their effectiveness in meeting the objectives of school and SEN policies.
