Highfields is a vibrant and popular school with approximately 1300 students, including 200 in our sixth form. Our students are friendly and highly motivated.

Highfields are proud to be a part of East Midlands Education Trust (EMET), a partnership of schools whose mission is to raise the educational standards and improve the life chances of all the children within our Trust. Our schools are high performing schools who represent the full age range of 3-19, along with an alternative education provider, and we place great emphasis on collaborative working across the Trust within a family of schools approach. Our schools enjoy a high degree of ‘aligned autonomy’ whilst, at the same time, they are supported by a central trust team who help ensure our schools provide the highest quality of provision possible.

We offer Art at A level. The curriculum is rich and challenging and focuses on building students’ enjoyment and interest along with the knowledge and skills required for examination success.

We are looking for an outstanding practitioner. The successful candidate will be resourceful, inspirational and forward thinking. You will share our vision of achieving excellence and raising further the standards of teaching and learning. There is the potential of Full time hours if candidates are offering an additional subject.

We wish to appoint a colleague to this post who has:

  • A strong background in Art, ideally including experience of teaching to A level
  • A passion for teaching, and a track record as a highly effective classroom practitioner
  • The ability to inspire and motivate students and colleagues to achieve their best
  • Highly effective interpersonal, communication, management and leadership skills
  • A commitment to professional development
  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.

Highfields is situated in Matlock, the county town of Derbyshire, on the south eastern edge of the beautiful Peak District National Park. It is within easy reach of Sheffield, Derby and Nottingham

On the application form, please focus on a detailed 'supporting statement' taking into account the person specification and indicating why you would be the best person for us to recruit to this position.

The successful candidate will have to meet the requirements of the person specification in order to be offered the post, will be required to undergo a full enhanced DBS check and must be eligible to work in the UK. The Trust is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Safeguarding checks will be undertaken during the recruitment process and this may include online searches.

We welcome applications regardless of age, gender, ethnicity or religion.

Vision and values

Highfields School’s main aim is to provide a happy, caring environment that helps each pupil to reach their full potential. It seeks to challenge every student and ensure they become lifelong learners. The school’s primary values are inclusion and equality, respect and tolerance, celebration of achievement, honesty, and caring for the environment. Teachers encourage students to become active citizens in their community.

The secondary school specialises in performing arts, but offers a broad and balanced curriculum that covers core subjects such as English, maths, science, philosophy and RE, and PE. Extra-curricular activities are also considered important and a wide variety of clubs and teams explore arts and sports.

Ofsted report

“A key factor is teachers’ ability to plan effective strategies that ensure active learning, promote confidence and independence, and engage all students in their learning. This is especially evident in sixth-form lessons. Another factor is that many teachers skilfully pose questions which require students to reply in detail, explain their responses and extend their thinking.”
