Job overview

The Heart of Mercia Multi-Academy Trust (MAT), formed on 1 April 2019 and delivers post 16 education in Hereford, Stourbridge and Worcester. Hereford Sixth Form College is part of this Trust. The MAT has an annual budget of £50m and serves the needs of 8,500 students across the region.

Hereford Sixth Form College has over 2000 full-time 16-19 students and an excellent reputation for its results and extra-curricular provision. Rated Ofsted outstanding in 2023, the College consistently achieves one of the highest Advanced Level points scores per entry of over 100 SFC’s nationally and has outstanding value-added results as measured by both the ALIS and ALPS systems.

The English Department is one of the largest subject areas within the College, offering a choice of English Literature (Edexcel) or English Language (Edexcel) at A level. The department also offers an extremely successful GCSE English (Eduqas) resit course, which has a high level of demand within the College. We offer a supportive environment within an improving and forward-looking department. Emphasis is placed on staff supporting each other, liaising over schemes of work and sharing good practice.

English continues to be a very popular subject and results are consistently good to outstanding in both raw and value-added terms.

There are currently 11 English Literature, 8 English Language and 5 GCSE classes with teaching groups generally between 18 to 24 in size. Teaching is shared between six staff, two of whom are part-time. The Department is well resourced, with an interactive whiteboard in each teaching room and a suite of computers for class use.

We are seeking a newly qualified or experienced teacher, who is an English Literature specialist, to teach A Level English Literature and GCSE English Language resit. Ideally you will have a degree in English Literature; if not, a keen interest in teaching A level English Literature is essential. The ability to teach GCSE Film and/or Citizenship would be an advantage.

You should be committed, enthusiastic and enjoy a challenge. You should be prepared to work hard within the team and be ambitious both on a personal level and for the department. The ability to motivate students is vital. Effective team working skills are essential.
