Job overview
On 7 January 1876, Cardinal Vaughan opened the doors of St Bede's College in Manchester. The thirst for knowledge and search for truth that characterised the life of St Bede was the founding idea of a college designed to foster in its pupils a love of learning. Almost a century and a half later, the school remains faithful to that founding idea: its aim is for students to reach their full potential and become true leaders capable of building a better world.
Christ remains at the centre and heart of the school, and pupils are seen as the children of God they are, regardless of their background or their own faith journey.
St. Bede's College strives to work in partnership with parents in order to become a centre where they can find all the support, service and advice they need. The College has a rich life, full of opportunities accessed through the house system, co-curricular activities and the students' own initiatives, all of which contribute to the positive growth mindset transmitted by its founder. While excellent teaching and small class sizes contribute to its students’ academic success, St Bede’s is equally committed to holistic education, allowing children to shape their future in accordance with their uniqueness.
About the Department
The English Department follows a long-term programme of study at KS3 which allows considerable freedom of choice and approach. Our aim at this level is to develop skills in preparation for GCSE: pupils respond regularly to a range of texts and are given the opportunity to write for different purposes and audiences. We value and promote oracy within the student body which in turn enhances confidence and the ability to express thoughts in a cogent and thoughtful manner.
GCSE courses commence at the start of Lower Fifth (Year 10) and are taught in mixed-ability groups. We are currently transitioning away from Edexcel IGCSE courses which include coursework to full external examination assessment. Individual teachers may select Literature set texts from the syllabus which they feel would be a good fit for them and their class.
At A Level we follow the AQA syllabus for English Language and the Edexcel syllabus for English Literature. Pupils are also offered the opportunity to undertake an Extended Project Qualification, which the members of the English Department regularly supervise.
The Department offers a wide range of co-curricular opportunities such as public speaking, Model United Nations, Dungeons & Dragons and an Ancient Egypt Club.
Duties and responsibilities
A full-time teacher would be expected to teach up to 24 lessons a week of 50-minutes each (Early Career Teachers can expect a reduced contact time and a full program of support). Typically all members of the Department teach throughout both Key Stages; some A Level teaching may be available depending on desire and prior experience.
Teachers are expected to contribute to co-curricular activities and the vast majority of teachers have a small form group. The form tutor mentors, teaches PSMEE and promotes the general progress and wellbeing of individual pupils in their group.
We warmly welcome candidates with open minds and hearts who seek to bring joy into the classroom and beyond. We teach enthusiastically and to a high standard and relish the idea of a like-minded individual joining the department.
