Job overview

Darwen Vale High School is a large comprehensive school on the outskirts of Darwen that benefits from outstanding facilities. We are an eight-form entry secondary school and have been oversubscribed for 2 years in a row. We have recently launched our own Sixth Form in collaboration with two other schools in our multi-academy trust (D6 - https://www.darwen6.com/).

Darwen Vale High School is an exciting, fast-paced workplace. We unashamedly have high standards for our staff and our students.

Due to internal growth, we are seeking to appoint a qualified and enthusiastic Teacher of Geography at Key Stages 3 and 4 to support the Humanities Department. We are looking for a committed practitioner who is positive, collaborative, committed to securing high standards of learning and teaching and believes that any child can achieve the highest grades regardless of background prior attainment.

Darwen Vale is now a Good school, following a successful OFSTED inspection. There really is no better time to join our school!

You are encouraged to apply early as we will interview before the closing date for right candidate.

What we will offer you:

1.      Support from the Multi Academy Trust (Aldridge Education).

2.      A clear open-door policy.

3.      A centralised behaviour system with centralised detentions.

4.      A strong emphasis on wellbeing with various wellbeing events timetabled in on the school calendar. A large focus on staff voice with an ongoing staff suggestion box and weekly thank you box.

5.      A school that is very much a hub for the local community.

6.      Staff socials which have included trip a trip to Aintree races and karaoke in Manchester.

7.      Access to an Employee Wellbeing Assistant which offers various discounts, access to an app etc.

8.      An extensive pastoral and safeguarding team with a non-teaching Head of Year and an Assistant Head of Year.

9.      Regular, up-to-date, research led CPD including the opportunity to undertake a range of NPQs.

Our outcomes for summer 2023 were the strongest that we have ever seen. The school has been on a journey of rapid improvement having moved from a progress score of -1.12 (2017) to -0.15 (2023).

If you are interested in having an informal conversation about the role or a visit to the school, please email Freddie Redfern (Assistant Principal) via Freddie.Redfern@darwenvale.com.

Darwen Vale High School

Darwen Vale’s original predecessor school, Darwen Higher Grade School, was opened 1894 and in 1929 became Darwen Grammar School. The school moved to its current location in 1938 and continued until 1972 when, under the reorganisation of the education system across the country, it became Darwen Vale High School. The school was named a specialist Engineering College under the 2002 Specialist Schools Programme in England.

The present school buildings were opened in 2012 following a £24million revamp under the Building Schools for the Future programme. The site had been closed for two years while large sections of the original structure were demolished and rebuilt. The existing front of the building was retained and cleaned up to keep the character of the old Grammar School. During the rebuilding process the school was relocated to the vacant former site of Darwen Moorland High School.

The school has strong links to its community, a focus on a providing a safe, secure and caring environment, and a clear vision of looking forward whilst building on the strong traditions of the previous schools.

In December 2013 the Department for Education (DfE) issued an Academy Order on the school naming Aldridge Education as its preferred sponsor and established an Interim Executive Board (IEB) to replace the Governing Body following the recommendation of Ofsted that an external review of governance be undertaken. Following a consultation in June 2014 the DfE confirmed the Academy conversion. The conversion was completed and Darwen Vale High School became an academy sponsored by Aldridge Education in December 2014.

Since conversion to academy status the school has shown a strong improvement in GCSE results. The overall percentage of students obtaining 5 + GCSEs at A*-C  EM* was up by 14% points to 52% with a significant rise in the numbers of passes at the top A* and A grades.

STEM and engineering continue to be priorities for the school going forward.
