1. THE SCHOOL

Gordano School is a large and successful 11-18 comprehensive secondary school approximately eight miles outside Bristol. This includes a thriving Sixth Form of over 350 students that is strongly integrated into the school and offers significant opportunities for Post-16 teaching in over 30 courses. We are the sole secondary school serving the popular town of Portishead and benefit greatly from being a central part of our community.

We view education as something bigger than just academic achievement. We have a record of considerable academic success but believe that an education should be about preparing young people for their future lives in a complete sense. As well as consistently positive Progress 8 and Level 3 Value Added outcomes at GCSE and A Level respectively, we place great emphasis on student leadership, an unparalleled extra-curricular programme and student progression to their next steps in a wide range of academic and vocational routes.

We value our membership of the Lighthouse Schools Partnership, the North Somerset Teaching Alliance and our role as a Teaching School in delivering high quality support and development for colleagues, both new to the profession and more established. Our size allows regular opportunities for progression into leadership roles.

2. The Inclusive Curriculum

Students who need reasonable adjustments to their curriculum will be referred to the Lead of Inclusive Curriculum through the Inclusion process/SLT, as part of a graduated response model. There will be a wide range of reasons why students may need reasonable adjustments to their curriculum. The Inclusive Curriculum will be one of a range of interventions offered by the Inclusion Team.

Referred students may:

  • Be offered a reduced timetable for a defined period, supplemented by taught lessons from the Lead of Inclusive Curriculum, intervention lessons from specialist teachers, intervention sessions from SEND specialists, and support sessions from the wider pastoral team.
  • For a variety of reasons, need to follow the ‘Inspire Pathway’ by withdrawing from one subject. Students will access lessons taught by the Lead for Inclusive Curriculum and intervention lessons from specialist teachers which will address gaps in learning and may lead to a qualification, if appropriate.
  • Be returning to us after a period of absence and need to be given support to address gaps in learning, make a positive start back with us, and return to lessons.
  • Be students with medical needs who need support with their learning.

The aim will be to support students back into their ‘mainstream’ timetable as far as possible; for students who need to follow the Inspire Pathway on a long-term basis, the Inclusive Curriculum will promote students’ independence, engagement with learning, and ambition in their capabilities.

3. The Role

We hope to appoint someone who can form an essential part of our excellent Inclusion team, working alongside the Lead of Inclusive Curriculum, Pastoral and SEND teams to provide first class support, provision and education to those students who need it most.

The successful candidate will:

  • Have a thorough understanding of the types of challenges students face and how these can affect their learning
  • Have a flexible and evolving mindset with a toolkit of different strategies to engage students
  • Have confidence and willingness to teach across a number of different subjects, core, non-core, vocational and non-credited courses.
  • Be a strong team player
  • Be a strong classroom practitioner with a real commitment to high quality motivational teaching and learning.
  • Be able to build strong relationships with the students and the community that supports them (for example parents, staff, outside agencies)
  • Be a reflective practitioner, always be willing to improve
  • This is a challenging, dynamic role, and the successful applicant will need to show that they are flexible, proactive and able to creatively problem solve. As the Inclusive Curriculum provision is ever evolving based on student needs; the responsibilities of the role therefore will change and adapt as required.

The school became an Academy in July 2011 and is also a specialist Technology College and Leading Edge School. We are a proud member of the North Somerset Teaching Alliance and were designated as a National Teaching School in September 2013.

In return, we offer a tremendous range of opportunities, both within the classroom and beyond, from age 11 and through into our flourishing sixth form.

Our teaching teams are strong and innovative, constantly re-visiting ways of bringing the curriculum to life. Often this is done using the most modern technology but our classrooms remain ordered and disciplined and we place great value on trusting relationships between students and their teachers.

There are some marvellous options at lunchtimes and after school. We enjoy excellent sporting facilities, a vibrant creative and performing arts menu and a wide range of clubs and societies. Children of all abilities are welcomed and encouraged to join in.

Our pastoral care is based upon a really strong and popular House system, both the welfare and academic progress of students being monitored by one of six Heads of House together with a form tutor. From this close monitoring will come a regular flow of information to parents and many opportunities for discussion and goal setting. Above all, Gordano is a happy school.

Working with local businesses and community groups we have created a dynamic and exciting learning centre that really does offer something for everyone. At Gordano we have a long-established reputation for success that has been based on hard work and high standards. We are proud of our comprehensive status and committed to the needs of all our learners, from the most academically gifted to those young people that need help and support with their learning.

Through the years:
2003 - Gordano School joined the prestigious ranks of the DFES "Leading Edge" scheme. As the lead school, Gordano works closely with St Katherines and Wyvern Schools on Leading Edge Projects.

2004 - Gordano School received The European Award for languages - the award was made in recognition of the school's innovative, effective and replicable approach to the teaching of French, German and Spanish. The School's project was also awarded a further prize of £1000 by the Mary Glasgow Trust for being the "The very best of the very best".

2006 - Gordano School celebrated its Golden Jubilee and on November 11th officially opened a new hall, library and drama studio, a new music suite, extra science laboratories, and a maths, psychology and social studies block.

2007 - In October Gordano School was re designated Specialist Technology College status. On November 1st Gordano School became a Foundation School.

The Lighthouse Schools Partnership (LSP)

The LSP is committed to helping students and pupils to flourish. Teachers within the Trust belong to a community of professionals, and benefit from a wide range of networks and development opportunities. Across the Trust they will be able to work with schools to develop specialisms and step up to senior leadership roles within and beyond the one school.
