Job overview
Thank you for expressing an interest in the post of temporary Teacher of PE at Bullers Wood School.
This post is available from February 2018 and offers an exciting opportunity to join an enthusiastic staff and very supportive department whose members are committed to making a real difference. The school was last fully inspected by Ofsted in May 2011 and we were awarded Outstanding. The report is available on our website.
We are very proud of our achievements and for the last 4 years we have been congratulated by the Minister of State for Schools on our achievements at GCSE level placing us in the top 100 non-selective state-funded schools in England. In addition, we were in the top 100 for pupils achieving the English Baccalaureate. We have also regularly been in the top 10% nationally (out of over 2,500 schools and colleges) for our A level performance assessed by ALPS. We are looking for an enthusiastic individual to help us to ensure that in every way Bullers Wood remains an outstanding school at our next Ofsted inspection, and that every one of our students achieves and exceeds both their targets and expectations.
The successful candidate will join Bullers Wood at an exciting time as we approach the opening of a secondary free school, Bullers Wood School for Boys in September 2018. This means that in the future there will be opportunities for enhanced professional and career development within the Bullers Wood Multi Academy Trust across both the Girls and the Boys schools.
The PE department has excellent facilities. On site there is a fully equipped gymnasium and a (newly surfaced) hard court area of four netball courts and a sports hall that was opened by Judith Oakes a former student of the school and Commonwealth Games gold medal winner in the shot putt. The P.E. Department has a games field off site, a short walk from the school. All staff are qualified and specialists in P.E. Staff are expected to teach across the full age range of the school form year 7-13. Experience of teaching physiology would be an advantage. The department offers a wealth of experience and opportunities to further career development through school and Borough Inset programmes.
At Key Stages 3 the main Year 7 & 8 activities in the Autumn and Spring Terms are games, netball, gymnastics, dance, trampolining and multi-skills. Cheerleading, aerobics, fitness, badminton, yoga and basketball are introduced in Year 9. During the Summer Term the main activities are athletics, tennis and striking and fielding skills. Year 7 and 8 students are streamed after an initial assessment in Year 7. In Year 9 students are then re-grouped in preparation for GCSE PE where they can then specialise on specific sports and activities.
At Key Stage 4 the GCSE in Physical Education is well established in the school. The examination results have been consistently well above the National Averages with many of the students achieving A* and A grades. Key stage 4 students receive a choice of leadership or examination courses, in addition to having an option to follow core PE activities.
At Sixth Form A level Physical Education AQA is offered to students.
The P.E. Department offers a full range of extra-curricular activities from netball and football teams, cross country, swimming, trampolining, gymnastics and cheerleading in the Autumn and Spring Terms to athletics, tennis and rounders in the Summer Term. Students are able to compete at various degrees of ability from Inter-Form competition to school leagues, regional and national level. Students are also able to take part in gym and dance festivals in Bromley and compete in the Bromley Schools’ trampolining competition. The level of expectation of teams is high.
The post holder will be expected to lead extracurricular activities.
