Job overview

TEACHER OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION (P.E) (FT/PT)

We are seeking an excellent and high performing P.E teacher to join our team to help drive forward further developments in the curriculum. The successful candidate will embrace the varied curriculum and opportunities this role will provide. Students enjoy a myriad of different activities as part of the Healthy-Active element including mountain biking (on the school-site), Yoga, mindfulness and many more.

Physical Education is a subject that runs both GCSE and A-Level qualifications and gets good numbers and results year on year. Students engage with these subjects and deal well with the mixture of practical and theory lessons.

Core Physical education is taught as part of our Healthy Living curriculum. Healthy Living is an innovative aspect of our curriculum and a bespoke course unique to Southfield School. Praised during our recent Ofsted visit, it aims to establish and sustain positive behaviours while ensuring students understand and apply the expected approach to learning and values of the school on a daily basis. The course combines a number of traditional disciplines in Year 7 to connect the curriculum and at the same time reduce the number of staff students encounter through their timetable. All Heathy Living sessions in years 7 and 8 are delivered by the same member of staff to ease the transitional experience from Year 6 to 7 and build relationships. The programme is delivered up to and including Key Stage Five in order to nurture a positive perception of physical activity, healthy nutritional habits and long-lasting learning habits are central to the Healthy Living Curriculum. This combines with personal development, careers guidance and immersive experiences that engage the students with global issues as we continue their progression as active participants locally, nationally and on the world stage.

Although the successful applicant will form part of our healthy living faculty and teach some classroom-based lessons in KS3, the intention would be for them to mainly teach active lessons for KS4 and KS5 alongside the examined courses.

The school was accredited as World Class in July 2021 and as such, we are committed to providing a world-class education for every student through a well-designed and balanced curriculum. Our established culture provides a calm, safe and stimulating learning environment.

Ethical leadership is at the core of all decision making at Southfield. As such, staff are valued, treated with respect and afforded a diverse range of opportunities that come with professional trust. We place significant emphasis on working collegiately as a staff to share our expertise and subsequently enhance the learning experience with our students. Every member of the staff is involved in a variety of professional learning programmes that take place every Wednesday across the academic year. All teachers are members of the Chartered College of Teaching providing access to the latest evidence and research.

You would be joining a friendly, hard-working team, with an ethos of collaborative planning and shared resources.

The post will start September 2024. Applications from ECTs are welcomed.

With our trust growing, we are likely to have many more career development opportunities coming up in future.

(We may interview suitable candidates prior to the closing date).

Ofsted report

As you will read, we continue to be a good school with two aspects of the inspection judgements deemed to be ‘Outstanding’. The first is the superb Personal Development our students receive, which includes opportunities such as; our bespoke Healthy Living and form time curriculums, careers guidance, our enrichment and electives programme, clubs, trips, DofE, and the CCF.  The second area is the exemplary Sixth Form provision we provide for all of our Post-16 students.

We are immensely proud of the wealth of positive aspects of our school highlighted in the report and would like to thank the whole school community for their continued support and positive engagement with our journey.

Even though we are proud of how this report shows the best of Southfield, we are not complacent.  It goes without saying that everyone involved with the school wants to continue moving the school forward, positively, with high expectations across the board.
