Job overview
The Science department is a dedicated and dynamic team, who are committed to achieving the best outcome for our students.
The department consists of eight teaching staff and three technicians. As a department, we uphold and instil the ethos of the wider Academy and provide a stimulating learning experience for our students through regular practical and investigatory activities.
Students are set according to ability from Year 9, this enables teaching staff to tailor the learning to the individual needs of our students. Years 7 and 8 are mixed ability and taught in forms.
Within the Science department we:
•aim to make our students aware of the moral, ethical and cultural implications of aspects of Science;
•set high expectations for all learners and staff alike, recognising and celebrating achievements;
•develop the skills of our students to help them become independent, resilient and self-motivated learners; and
•give opportunities for our staff to constantly develop their practice.
In Years 7-9, students follow the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme this is the framework of our curriculum and encourages students to investigate issues through research, observation and experimentation, working independently and collaboratively. The curriculum offered in Years 7-9 covers all three Science disciplines of Science: Biology, Chemistry and Physics. There are nine topics taught each year which are assessed periodically throughout the year and build the foundations for GCSE study.
In Years 10 and 11 all students follow the AQA Trilogy Combined Science syllabus with the most able studying the three separate Sciences. The AQA Trilogy Combined Sciences covers all three Science disciplines; Biology, Chemistry and Physics. At GCSE we have found that having teachers teach all three disciplines up to GCSE encourages and fosters better relationships with students, promotes consistency, reduces workload and provides staff with the opportunity to improve their subject knowledge across all disciplines. As a department we meet regularly to deliver in-house continuous professional development, plan collaboratively and share all resources.
At Post 16, we currently offer IB Biology, IB Chemistry IB Physics to both higher and standard level.

Ofsted report
“The school motto of ‘pride in our success’ permeates through how pupils conduct themselves around the school. They strive to become well-rounded and respectful members of society. Pupils show kindness and consideration to each other because they want everyone to feel included. A strong pastoral provision in every key stage means that pupils feel well supported and have someone to go to if they need help. Should bullying happen, pupils know that staff will help them resolve issues quickly. Relationships between staff and pupils are nurturing and positive. This means that pupils feel safe and well looked after.
