Job overview
Science is the core of everything we do at Discovery School. We are a 13-19 school in the centre of Newcastle. Discovery School was set up to train the scientists and engineers of the future. We teach triple science to all our students. We are looking to recruit a teacher of science with a specialism in biology, chemistry or physics to join our team.
Ok so the school went into 'serious weaknesses' last May but look what we've done since: we've added German, PE, geography and art and design to the curriculum; we've got new trustees and new leaders; we've revitalised teaching and learning, attendance monitoring, tracking of pupil progress. Even Ofsted have said we are 'taking effective actions towards the removal of the serious weaknesses designation'. Don't believe us. Read the Monitoring Visit Report.
This post is fixed term until Summer 2018 but we will be advertising a full time post starting September 2018 in the next few weeks so indicate on your application form if you are interested in the permanent position too.
We can offer you:
- The opportunity to make a difference to the lives of some amazing students
- Great staff and espirit de corps

The successful candidate:
- Will be confident to deliver KS3 and KS4 lessons in science. You will also get a chance to teach KS5 in your area of specialism
- Excellent subject knowledge and a passion for teaching
- Be able to deliver engaging lessons which inspire and encourage all students to value the importance of science in everyday life
- Be a newly qualified or experienced teacher - we have some amazing NQTs and NQT+1 in key positions. If you're good enough we'll give you the job! If you're really good you'll grow the job into something bigger and better than we've thought of so far!

Discovery School is the first of its kind; a new, industry-driven technical school for 13-19 year olds from Tyne and Wear, Northumberland and County Durham. Our aims are to provide young people with specialist training to meet the requirements of the modern engineering industry.
Discovery School specialises in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM). It will equip young people to fill the skills gaps in the sizeable and vibrant specialised engineering sector in the region which has a demand for highly qualified engineers and technicians. The curriculum is designed to offer opportunities for all learners to develop the skills, knowledge and personal qualities they will need to be successful. A unique aspect of the work Discovery School is its link with employers and their involvement in shaping curriculum and supporting delivery. It offers a unique learning experience that looks feels and operates like a high-tech engineering facility in Silicon Valley rather than a traditional secondary school.
Newcastle upon Tyne, more than any other British city, offers a natural location for the Discovery School with its long and proud heritage of complex industrial engineering, from shipbuilding and railways to defence industries, and a present day position at the forefront of scientific developments.
