With a rich heritage dating back to 1732, The Portsmouth Grammar School (PGS) remains true to the aims of its founder, Dr William Smith, in providing an excellent education that develops in pupils a hunger for broader horizons. Located on a well-resourced campus in the heart of historic Portsmouth, PGS today inspires and nurtures over 1,300 boys and girls aged 2½-18. Through its focus on equipping pupils for life beyond PGS and encouraging pupils to think not only about where they will be at 18 but where they aspire to be at 25, the School continues to honour the legacy of its founder whilst adapting its mission for the challenges of 21st century life.

PGS enjoys superb facilities in a unique historic location, including a state-of-the-art Science Centre, a Sixth Form Centre, the Health and Wellbeing Centre, a theatre and dining hall complex, a beautifully refurbished library, and its own excellent sports ground at Hilsea.

An outstanding individual is sought to be Assistant Head (Head of Sixth Form) at this leading co-educational school. Working closely with the Head and Deputy Heads, the postholder will be responsible for the leadership and management of the Sixth Form and as a member of the Senior Management Team will have input into the strategic development of the academic and pastoral life of the school.

The person appointed will be a good honours graduate, an outstanding classroom practitioner with high levels of administrative efficiency, considerable personal stamina and resilience, knowledge of current educational trends, and a clear commitment to the safeguarding and well-being of pupils.

PGS has an excellent record in the development of senior leaders and the post will provide excellent preparation for headship in due course.

ISI Report 2022

During an ISI Inspection in late 2022 both the achievement of the pupils, including their academic development and the personal development of the pupils were found to be excellent - the highest possible classification. The Inspection also looked at the School’s compliance with the regulatory standards and requirements. PGS met all the standards required.
