Hawkswood Primary is an Outstanding Primary Pupil Referral Unit and specialist provision for children Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. We were last inspected in March 2024 and described as 'a place where children thrive'.

Our children are awesome and require calm, encouraging and enabling adult support. They are keen to learn, but come to us with specific gaps in learning due to poor attendance, low levels of resilience or addition needs linked to behaviour or social, emotional and mental health needs. Some of our children have an EHCP for additional needs such as ADHD and or ASD.

As a team we work hard to close these gaps to enable children to develop academically, socially and emotionally, so that they can return to mainstream school. We are seeking committed and motivated staff to work as part of our team. Our curriculum is engaging, exciting and focuses on the development of the whole child including personal, social, cognitive, creative, health and wellbeing.

Our pupils feel that the best 5 things about our school are:

  1. We have animals (2 dogs, 2 guinea pigs, 12 fish).
  2. The way that staff support us, they understand that we can be anxious and scared, they help to bring out the best in us.
  3. Pupils are kind and we help each other.
  4. We feel safe at Hawkswood, nobody shouts and the school is small and very welcoming.
  5. Our learning, we have PE every day and everyone can access after school club. We also have daily Maths, English and Phonics, plus interventions which make us brilliant readers and mathematicians. In the afternoons we have a topic and explore lots of interesting facts and knowledge.

What are our pupils looking for?

  1. People who like animals and are caring.
  2. People who bring their personality and special interests to share in after school club – this year we have learnt to: play chess, enjoy sport, use coding, arts and crafts and we are about to start cycling! What could you help us learn?
  3. People who get that we are all different, and some of us have autism. Staff who are willing to learn about autism.
  4. Staff who genuinely care and understand that sometimes we can be dysregulated, but it means there is something we need help with something and we need the support of a calm adult.
  5. Teachers who explain learning in interesting ways that engage us at our individual levels.

Don’t worry if you don’t have special school or alternative provision experience: very few of us did before we came here, the drive and desire to learn is however absolutely essential.

We believe that skills and knowledge can be learnt, what is more important to us is your positivity, love for teaching and commitment to giving young people brilliant learning experiences.
