About the Role

The role of the Classroom Support Assistant is to support the school and classroom teachers in providing quality learning experiences for all students, particularly those with individual needs. The CSA can be designated to a class, an individual student/s or deliver a specific learning program. The CSA is directly responsible to the Classroom Support Coordinator.

This position is temporary in nature as it replaces an employee who is on leave or secondment.

Key Responsibilities

The role of a Classroom Support Assistant include the following, but not limited to:

  • Become familiar with the individual needs of students and have a clear understanding of their Personal Plan.
  • Work actively in the classroom to reinforce the learning of individuals/ small groups
  • Participates in professional learning of intervention programs and implements these programs, individual and in small groups i.e MacqLit
  • Ensure students are engaged and quietly refocus students when necessary
  • Reword and repeat teacher directions to individual students
  • Support students with organisational and social skills e.g. use of visual timetables, presentation of schoolwork, etc.
  • Notify the Assistant Principal of any concerns after speaking with the classroom teacher
  • Use initiative when the classroom teacher is absent and the casual teacher does not know the students
  • Attend school assemblies and activities/excursions and assist in supervising relevant year group
  • Provide physical support when necessary e.g. personal hygiene
  • Provide support to individual students at Recess or Lunch on the playground when rostered to do so.
  • Participates in the occasional staff meeting when relevant to the CSA role i.e first aid course
  • Follows a set timetable, supporting a number of students in the classroom and in small/individual settings.

Essential Criteria

To be team member of the St Bernard’s Primary School Staff, the successful applicant will need to be a person who demonstrates the ability to:

  1. Assist teacher/classroom support teacher, to modify tasks/assessments
  2. Administer tests with individuals/small groups and assisting teachers to administer tests
  3. Stocktake Learning Support resources
  4. Maintain classroom support class notes at the end of each class and perform tasks required e.g. data entry, filing
  5. Assist in setting up areas for teaching and learning activities
  6. Shows a strong commitment to St Bernard’s Vision and Mission and a willingness to foster it in the St Bernard’s community.
  7. Demonstrates excellent communication and interpersonal skils and the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  8. Displays an interest in promoting excellence in education.
  9. Participates in the life of the school
  10. All duties are to be carried out in a professional, courteous and obliging manner.

  • You must be an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident to be eligible to apply for this position.
  • Appointment is subject to satisfactory employment screening for child-related employment in accordance with CECG policy.
