Job overview

Drama Tutor at the James Marks Academy

c/o Roman Fields Academy, Box Lane, Hemel Hempstead, Herts, HP3 0DF

Tel: 01442 256915

Pay:                £19,008 - £22,306

Start Date:     September 2024

Location:        Welwyn Garden City

This post offers the opportunity to:

  • Shape the Drama curriculum and learning in an award-winning trust.
  •  Work with a committed and stable staff body, with retention rates that have been around 95% for the past 4 years?
  • Have a significant (we usually say ‘dramatic’...) positive impact on the lives of young people with diverse needs.

This role offers an exceptional chance for a dynamic, motivated and imaginative individual to leave a lasting impact on our group of schools. You will have the support of our experienced staff and the flexibility to tailor the curriculum to the needs of the pupils. The main focus would be to deliver lessons to pupils to nurture their drama skills, especially their ability to develop their emotional range, voice, diction and collaboration. We want to inspire our pupils to perform and develop their confidence.

Experience in the field of SEN is not necessary because we feel we can support the professional development of any dedicated practitioner. What is absolutely essential, however, is a commitment to high expectations.

This post is part-time at the James Marks Academy, a brand new free school located in Welwyn Garden City. However, there is the opportunity to work up to full-time across the Trust. At the JMA the role is 0.4 FTE but this could be supplemented with a similar allocation to our other schools (Roman Fields and Forest House) making the role potentially 1.0 FTE.

If you want a better understanding of the views of current parents and staff, please see the NAS report and the staff survey feedback on our website. Both were completed anonymously in January 2023.

Visits available any time prior to the closing date.

Applications Close: 31st May 2024

Interviews: Week commencing 10th June 2024

Roman Fields is a county wide provision based near Hemel Hempstead. In 2018, Roman Fields was awarded the National Autistic Society's Excellence award their very top award, given annually to one school/college/provider only. Soon after, we had a successful Ofsted inspection, where we were graded "Outstanding" in all areas.

Roman Fields became an academy in April 2021 and will be a standalone academy within the James Marks Academy Trust, until it is joined by a second school, the purpose-built free school, the James Marks Academy, in Sept 2023.

Our small trust and the academies within it, will provide pupils, with bespoke timetables that build on their strengths and interests and thus allow them to both re-engage with, and re-discover their love of learning. We offer a provision for a wide range of abilities, including functional skills, vocational qualifications, GCSE and A Level. Please see our examination results on our website, as we are exceptionally proud of our pupils and their achievements.

Our trust is built on academic achievement and relationships, as these are the drivers that enable pupils to flourish personally, socially and emotionally too.

Our aim is to ensure our pupils leave us with clear goals and ultimately become the successful, happy, economically active adults they can be.

All pupils on roll have an EHC plan. Most of our pupils have an autism diagnosis, some have multiple diagnoses including SEMH. The vast majority of our pupils are in KS4 (14-16) and KS5 (16-18) we have a core offer of Maths, English, Science and ICT or Business. The rest of an individual pupil's timetable will be designed around their interests. We are also able to offer Humanities, Art and Music up to GCSE and beyond.

If you are a passionate, committed professional who recognises how much progress pupils can make when support and challenge are in equilibrium, and relationships are strong, we would welcome your application.
