We believe the English Department should be the heartbeat of Uppingham School. Together, with the Head of English, and with your vision and energy to inspire and challenge pupils to the highest academic levels, we will make this happen.

As the Second in Department, you will support the Head of English in leading the Department to ensure teaching is inspirational and differentiated to advantage each child at GCSE and A Level, so that every child is able to write well, enjoy literature in its many forms, and know how to interpret and analyse text.

With the Head of English, you will ensure that the team of English teachers are being challenged to develop professionally, through effective guidance and appraisals. You will also actively shape the syllabus, discuss text choices, and share responsibility for ensuring the Department is constantly creating resources at each stage of the pupils’ needs.

Located at the heart of the main School quads, the English Department is based within a dedicated English building, which is well resourced with a specialist library, a laptop suite and interactive whiteboards. For our pupils, English continues to be a popular choice for study at university, including Oxbridge.

The role offers ample scope to bring initiative to extra-curricular and extension activities and you will find that the role is one that can be evolved to achieve significant professional development.

If you can enthuse and inspire pupils in ways they find appropriately challenging and are a strong, dynamic character with unimpeachable subject knowledge and exemplary classroom management skills we would be delighted to hear from you.

“Pupils demonstrate positive attitudes towards work and study. They have good literacy skills at all ages and articulate ideas and opinions fluently. Work is generally presented neatly and pupils’ note-taking is effective. They develop good numeracy skills and their capacity to think critically is notable. Creative abilities are well developed and their exploration of ideas is particularly marked in their enrichment activities. Pupils’ study habits are good. In the lessons observed, pupils worked very well with each other, and also worked well independently. They enjoy their work and this stems in part from the good-natured atmosphere in lessons. Pupils use information and communications technology (ICT) proficiently.”
