Head of Broadlands Hall School

About our Group

Broadlands Hall is an independent school for 50 boys aged 11-19 years who have special educational needs, including autism and associated learning and emotional difficulties. Established in 2004, the School is purpose-built and occupies a 6-acre site near Haverhill, Suffolk, 30 minutes from Cambridge. The School is well-resourced, with committed staff and significant outcomes for pupils.

Approximately one third of our pupils are in residential care for between 39-52 weeks a year and they are placed by Local Authorities in our three Children’s Homes in the local area. The remainder are day pupils. Most of the pupils are taught on a ratio of 1:1 and some are 2:1.

The School is fully supported by Head Office which works with the Head in recruitment, health and safety, transport and finance.

The School is currently graded as Good by Ofsted.

The Person we are looking for

The successor to our current Head, Mr Ahmed, will be an experienced Head or Deputy Head who is currently working in a similar field.  You will have excellent administrative skills and an in-depth knowledge of Ofsted requirements. You will be able to manage a large number of staff well and work closely and happily with those around you. You will enjoy teaching. You will have initiative, be dedicated and have passion for running a thriving, busy School.   You will be empathetic and firm. You will be prepared, and able, to deal effectively with some challenging pupils and willing to ‘go the extra mile’ with them. You will lead your staff team by example and link in with the Managers of our Homes in an effective and professional way. We will wait until Jan 2025 for the right person to take up the appointment although we would prefer a start date of September 2024 if this fits in with you.

Benefits

Conditions are commensurate with us wanting to attract the very best candidates. Salary will be in the range of £75-95K, dependent upon skills and experience, with free School fees for children aged between 6 months and 13 years at the local independent prep school (Barnardiston Hall Preparatory School) some 2 miles away (worth up to £14K per annum, per child). A character 3-bedroomed house is also available nearby. The School operates a pension scheme.

Application Procedure

The successful candidate will be required to apply for an Enhanced DBS and references will be sought from previous employers. All applications must be made on the official Application Form which can be downloaded below. Candidates are warmly invited to visit the School prior to applying for the post and applications for this should be made directly to Mrs Gundersen at Barnardiston Hall on 01440 786316. You may also telephone the Principal, Keith Boulter, for an informal discussion about the post by emailing the Principal’s PA, Mrs Lesley Gundersen on l.gundersen@bhps-staff.co.uk giving your name, telephone number and suitable times when you are available to take a call.

Closing date for applications: 30th May 2024. However, applications will be looked at as they are received and so early application is encouraged.

PLEASE NOTE THAT APPLICANTS MUST HAVE FULL RIGHT TO WORK IN THE UK AS WE ARE UNABLE TO SPONSOR
