About the Role

An exciting opportunity exists for a motivated and dynamic educator to join the leadership team at Canberra Grammar School. As the Head of Department – Mathematics you will lead curriculum in line with school initiatives, develop the quality of teaching and learning, and nurture positive relationships between students, teachers, and stakeholders.

The Mathematics Department at Canberra Grammar School is a warm and collegial team of over twenty highly qualified and experienced teachers. Most are full-time, while some work across other Departments or carry a range of leadership roles in the School. All are dedicated professional educators committed to the intellectual and personal growth of over 1200 students taking Mathematics in the Senior School from Year 7 to Year 12.


Selection Criteria

As Head of the Mathematics department, you will lead, develop and manage the effective delivery of an outstanding curriculum, which enables the highest level of scholar progress and attainment.

The duties and tasks are varied and complex needing independent judgment. Below you will find a list of the key duties and responsibilities:

  • Lead the school department to develop, articulate and commit to a shared educational vision focused on providing quality learning outcomes for all students.
  • take a leading role in modelling excellence in mathematics education and pedagogy
  • actively exercise responsibility for leadership, support, and the well‐being of the Mathematics Department
  • design, develop, and maintain a Mathematics curriculum programme that meets the needs of all students in the School from Year 7 to Year 12
  • assist the Director of Academic Education and Curriculum and Learning Coordinator in ensuring vitality and renewal of Mathematics teaching practices
  • exercise responsibilities in partnership with the Director of Academic Education and the Director of Student Development
  • implement an effective mentoring scheme within the department
  • develop an effective system of teacher evaluation
  • provide support for the professional growth of staff in relation to their teaching of Mathematics
  • encourage collaborative decision‐making where appropriate in the operation of the Mathematics department.
  • Oversee the preparation of registration documentation in the department.
