Job overview

The University of Liverpool Maths School is a state sixth form that teaches mathematics, further mathematics, physics and computer science to talented and motivated 16 to 19-year-old students from a wide variety of backgrounds. Recently judged Outstanding in all areas by Ofsted, the school has achieved exceptional academic results since opening in September 2020, while providing a strongly inclusive and supportive pastoral environment for students.

We are looking for two inspiring and thoughtful mathematicians to

  • Lead our team of expert mathematicians delivering A-Level Mathematics, Further Mathematics, and much else
  • Lead our outreach programme, which provides support, enrichment and inspiration to a large number of students across the Liverpool City Region. We collaborate with the University of Liverpool, the NW3 Mathshub, Axiom Maths, the Tutor Trust and other organisations in the delivery of our outreach work.

You will need to be an excellent teacher of mathematics with a strong commitment to equality of opportunities for young people. We are looking for an ambitious leader with strong communication skills, empathy for the needs of young people and the ability to build relationships with stakeholders and establish strong working relationships with schools and other providers.

Working at ULMaS gives you the opportunity to work with an exceptionally well motivated and committed group of young people and a warmly supportive staff team under a leadership that places a high priority on staff wellbeing and responding to the needs of staff and students. Exciting opportunities for development and promotion are available in the national network of specialist mathematics.

How to apply

Applicants should complete the online application form through the TES website/ app.

The school is currently advertising two middle leadership roles for mathematics specialists:

  • Head of Mathematics
  • Head of Outreach

Depending on a variety of factors we may not ultimately be in a position to appoint to both roles before half term. In your application you should make it clear whether you wish to be considered for both roles, or only one of them.

The application should include a brief supporting statement outlining how the applicant’s skills, qualifications and experience are fitted to the role and meet or exceed the requirements of the person specification. The statement should explain how your experience and skills meet the requirements of the person specification and what might make you different from other candidates. It need not exceed 500 words.

The closing date for applications is 2359 on Thursday 16th May 2024.

Depending on the size of the shortlist, online interviews may be arranged with shortlisted candidates at the start of the week commencing 20th May, and second round interviews will take place in school on Wednesday 22nd May. We will contact you to discuss when an online first round interview would be convenient.

Working in Liverpool

The Liverpool of today is a cosmopolitan and vibrant city attracting people from all over the world who want to enjoy the good things in life whilst progressing with their career.

With a population of 7 million, England's North West incorporates the vibrant cities of Chester, Liverpool and Manchester, and is the UK's largest economic region outside London and the South East. Lying at the geographical centre of the British Isles, over 400 million people across Europe are within four hours flight. The Liverpool John Lennon airport is also the fastest growing in Europe.

As evidence of the area's new dynamism, Liverpool city centre's population has more than tripled in the last 10 years and is forecast to double again in the next 5 years.

Offering affordable housing, good schools, easy access to all other parts of the UK and Europe via road, rail and air, Liverpool provides the history, culture and sporting attractions to create a work/life balance that you and your family can enjoy.

Liverpool is in the midst of exciting economic, cultural and social regeneration. The area is central to STEM development, being at the heart of the UK's chemical, aerospace manufacturing and production industries, home to the second biggest digital industry cluster in Europe and the location of some of the most important physics and life-sciences research in Europe.

The region is the 'arts spend capital of Britain'. Three times more money was spent last year on galleries and museums in the North West than on cultural buildings in London. Added to that, childcare costs around £50 per week less in the North West than in London and weekly travel costs are less than half those in the capital.  Liverpool is the most filmed British city outside London and the city's Albert Dock contains the largest group of grade-one listed buildings in the UK.
