Job overview

The Robert Fitzroy Academy is a three-form entry primary school in Croydon situated in the heart of the local community. We are an Ofsted rated ‘Good School’ with two previous ‘Good’ inspections since our opening in 2012.

It is our goal to create a school where children can achieve academically but also flourish as citizens of the world. We are a school who believe in human flourishing; championing the children’s whole experience at school. We want our enriching and tailored curriculum to impact the children’s mind, body and soul.

Mission Statement

The Robert Fitzroy Academy caters for children aged between 4 and 11. We provide our children with a creative and progressive learning environment in which they develop their academic, physical, spiritual, moral, social and cultural lives. We recognise and value the rich linguistic and cultural diversity in our school and the local community. We endeavour to ensure that each child is able to have the skills, independence and initiative to excel in their achievements. We are committed to developing resilient, engaged life-long learners who are responsible members of an aspirational school and wider community.

Our Aims

To fulfil our mission statement, our aims are:

·      To create a safe, welcoming, creative learning environment that reflects the high expectations we have for all in the RFA community

·      To provide an engaging curriculum that facilitates the characteristics of effective learning, creates independent thinkers and inspires young minds

·      To encourage our pupils and promote confidence through celebrating personal, social and academic achievement

·      To develop and maintain links with our parent and carers involving them as active partners with the school for the benefit of their children’s education

·      To serve the community by developing responsible citizens

What we are looking for in our next Headteacher

We are seeking an outstanding Headteacher, or an outstanding Deputy Headteacher, who is an innovative, responsible and insightful professional, with the passion, drive, and enthusiasm to build on Robert Fitzroy Academy’s considerable strengths. You will be able to lead, motivate, develop, and inspire a school team of staff and governors who are passionately committed to giving pupils a wide range of real-life and enriching experiences, within a culture of highest expectations.

You will demonstrate a clear understanding of current accountability frameworks and the competency to lead the school to deservedly positive outcomes. In addition, you will be able to demonstrate your ability to manage, prioritise and organise your workload, to show flexibility and resilience and recognise the need for pastoral care for all members of the community of the school. A commitment to well-being and mental health is essential.

Being part of REAch2

Resilience, Focus, Aspiration

OUR MISSION

We are a school for human flourishing. Never before have educators been under so much pressure to demonstrate academic achievements and progress through results. At RFA we hold fast to the belief that our pupil’s well-being, confidence and happiness will provide the right foundation for academic rigour. Our aim is to provide a complete education – one that nourishes the mind, body and spirit. The whole child is the whole point of what we do.

We nurture learners who are Resilient, Focused and Aspirational. We don’t want these letters to just adorn the jumpers of our pupils but we want them to be the daily oxygen that we breathe. And how do we do that? By believing in and being committed  to the transformative power of four types of capital.

Cultural capital

We give pupils a range of experience beyond the academic curriculum offering them opportunities to see the world differently. We are strongly committed to the arts and believe it is every child’s right to take part in creative and cultural experiences.

Aspirational capital

A growth mindset approach underpins every aspect of school life. Children are given opportunities to excel.

Pastoral capital

Ensuring that pupil well-being is at the heart of all we do. We offer a range of therapies including Lego and art therapy for vulnerable pupils. Principled relationships exist throughout the school

Professional capital

Investing in our teachers means we invest in our pupils.

OUR CURRICULUM

At RFA, we recognise that learning is a complex process and that the days of "talk and chalk" are long gone! Children learn in different ways and if you come into our lessons, you will see multi-sensory, innovative teaching leading to fantastic learning experiences.

You will see teachers questioning children to think more deeply and you will see children understanding themselves as learners. We believe in the power of text to transform reading and writing across the school and our English curriculum is taught through high quality children’s literature. Even our maths is sometimes taught through a text base approach.

Specialist Art, Music, Drama and PE teachers are employed at RFA to ensure the highest quality of teaching is taking place across the curriculum. These teachers plan lessons and projects that broaden pupils’ knowledge, skills and attitudes. Events throughout the school year such as the European Day of Languages, Black History Month, World Book Day and Shakespeare Week also enhance and enrich pupils’ learning and enjoyment at school.
